Just over 90 days away, and Fan Sided is first out of the gate, predicting a Gopher win:

This is a tough start to the Matt Rhule era. Minnesota will be one of the favorites to win the Big Ten West, but PJ Fleck and Co. will be breaking in a new quarterback. There’s a chance Nebraska could pull off the early-season upset, but the fact that this is in Minneapolis crushes any hope.

Fleck and the Gophers will pick up a win but it won’t be the blowout that they would have hoped in the home opener.

Prediction: Loss (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten)

Go Gophers!!

Simon chimes in:

Week 1 vs. Nebraska (8/31)

Matt Rhule makes his Big Ten debut against the Minnesota Gophers at Huntington Bank Stadium. Rhule is tasked with turning around a Cornhusker team that went 4-8 last season. Jeff Sims, the former Georgia Tech quarterback, will start for Nebraska, while the Gophers kick off the Athan Kaliakmanis era as the starter. The Gophers’ depth and experience will prove too much for the Cornhuskers.

Projection: Gophers win 27-13

Seems like they got this twisted...aren't Nebraska breaking a new QB?
Ours has already had 5 starts for the Gophers.

College Football News has Minnesota edging out Nebraska in the opener, 24-16
Minnesota will grind its way to a win, but Nebraska fans will get a glimpse of what’s coming.

The Husker offense will work on the first few drives, but the Gopher defense will settle in, the ground attack will take over the tempo, and the team that was third in the nation in time of possession will own the clock in the second half for - sorry, Nebraska fans; I know you’re used to this, and it’ll all get better soon - a close win.

OddShark has Minnesota winning 29-20
Minnesota will Win, Cover the Spread, and the Total will go Over.

Week 1: Nebraska (W)

There’s always a degree of challenge to facing a first-year coach in his first game. Without much way of scouting, it comes down to having dudes. And right now, Minnesota has more dudes than Nebraska.

Go Gophers!!

Picks and Parlays has Minnesota winning 30-20
Minnesota had an excellent defense last season allowing just 13.8 points per game which was fourth in the nation and the Golden Gophers were ninth in yards allowed but must replace several players who have either graduated, transferred or moved on to the NFL. Nevertheless, with a talented quarterback returning and a transfer running back, Minnesota’s offense will help carry the load, and be enough to overcome an improved Nebraska squad.

Greder chimes in:

Prediction: For the Gophers, it’s the first of four Big Ten West games against new head coaches in 2023. Fleck will show his program is further along, but it will be yet another one-score game. Gophers, 26-21

Go Gophers!!

Not getting this analysis... further along but only score 26 and win by five?

Luke Mullin chimes in:

I’ll predict a one-score Minnesota win, 28-21 over Nebraska.

Go Gophers!!

STrib chimes in:

My expectation: Nebraska lost the past three in the series by a TD. The Huskers will push the Gophers and keep it a tight game, but Minnesota has enough playmakers to secure the win. Gophers 24, Nebraska 20

Go Gophers!!

Fox Sports thinks it won't be as close as the spread indicates.

Minnesota vs. Nebraska Prediction

  • Pick ATS: Minnesota (-7)
  • Pick OU: Over (43)
  • Prediction: Minnesota 32, Nebraska 13

Ryan Burns at 247 Sports. He's written a very in-depth analysis at his site

"So if you just scrolled down to this section to see what I said and didn't read anything else above, here's the TL:R.

- Get Athan Kaliakmanis going early

- Don't let Jeff Sims' legs beat you

- Make the better second half adjustments

----

Minnesota has won five of the last six in this series and are over a touchdown favorite heading into kickoff on Thursday night. The Gophers have also won the previous three games by seven points in each of the last three meetings.

I think game one will be ugly at times as both teams get their feet wet, but I trust Minnesota's offense and defense more. The Gophers have won this game in the trenches in each of the last few years, and that's told the story on the scoreboard. I don't see that changing on Thursday night.

Minnesota 23, Nebraska 17

My guess in most of these one score predictions is they are assuming we control the game and do enough to win without really trying to open it up and blow them out. Score will look close even if the game really isn't.

So what about "further along"? What you're describing sounds like more of the same.

It's a fair prediction. Gophers have had their fair share of tight early season contests under Fleck....even when the team has been a heavy favorite.

Who knows....but there is a general theme in a lot of the predictions that we will win but the score won't be lopsided.

Much of that probably comes from the fact that Fleck really doesn't seem to try and blow teams out instead settling for doing enough to get the W without taking a ton of risk.

Nebraska beat Iowa next year
We aren’t playing Kent state here
If further along, I would think Gophs would beat Nebby by more than last year, especially at home. I'll be sure to place a bet on next year's Iowa/Nebby game, thanks for the tip!

One game doesn’t really measure a program at all.
Nor does comparative scoring.

Obviously you disagree and that’s okay

Just commenting on the contradictory nature of that line from the article.
