The Pioneer Press sent Marcus Fuller and he filed stories from Chicago. He also asked one question. Grade A.
The Star Tribune sent Joe Christensen and he filed stories from Chicago. If he asked a question he did not identify himself. Grade A
Fox Sports North sent Jesse Temple and he filed stories from Chicago. They being a sports organization, they Still Get an A.
Saint Cloud Time did not send anyone. However, the have an AP story from Chicago with one story Grade C
Mankato Free Press nothing, no coverage Grade F.
Rochester Post Bulletin nothing no coverage Grade F
West Central Tribune nothing no coverage Grade F

KFAN, Justin Gard with Pod Cast with Mike Grim. Interviews with Coach Kill and players. B+ They are the home of the Gopher to achieve an A they must be live and have their phones open for questions.

KSTP an ESPN radio affiliate offered nothing. Grade F
KSTP TV had maybe 30 seconds of video with Chris Long commenting Grade C.
WCCO Radio/TV nothing I heard or could find they are too busy Grade F
WCCO TV didn't watch Grade I
KARE 11 TV didn't watch Grade I
FOX9 didn't watch Grade I

I was a little disappointed in the KFAN coverage...

It'd be nice to get a break from the loco AJ Mansour "long snapping during low barometric pressure zones" analysis from Vikings Training camp to hear some Gophers talk

It's always easy to spend other people's money, isn't it?

I agree with your grades. Two years ago Kill was totally ignored and then the only questions were regarding his health. I'm seeing more interest from the media and the questions getting better - we're now on the radar.

The B1G Network has had some very good analysis. Yes, this is their forte', but even so, I'm seeing some depth as opposed to the lazy once-over.

Why would the media travel to Chicago to talk to Jerry Kill when they can do it on the first day of camp in a few days?

The KFAN radio show has gone from 60% of its time devoted to the Vikings in March through June to 98.4% now that camp has opened. There are reports for each breath that each player takes, both inhale and exhale. I have always loved the Vikings but I don't think I could stomach that much Vikings coverage if they were the Vegas favorites to win the Super Bowl this year.

Why would you spend money to go to Chicago and cover The Big 10 Media Day? Its the kickoff of the season, and by filing a story or stories from Coach Kill or the players lets readers, listeners, and viewers that you have Gopher Football Coverage from the jump. A reporter could get interviews not only with the Gophers but with all the Western Division Coaches and players and their outlook. Opinion of the Gopher strides and hold them for a story before we play them, get time before the game to get updates and compare. But without the effort at the kickoff you have nothing. And by not going you are making the statement we don't care. And having made that statement would you look for the latest Gopher coverage from Marcus or Joe, or would wait for KSTP radio or Mike Max?

And what would be the effect. If you are newspaper, there are at least 35,000 loyal Gopher Fans who are under served, there are alumni, the are casual fans who would buy a paper if they were assured there would be coverage other than Sunday after a game if there is space. What would probably could be 50,000 fans do for the circulation of any of these papers? They will say there is no interest, I would say there is no coverage.

If you are radio station, there is a different demographic for Gopher Football than there is for the Vikings. If you ever hope to be seen as a viable home for the home of The Gophers just what are you doing to cultivate the interest to make an offer. Or if you have the rights just what are you doing to support the idea its in the right hands. If you are an affiliate of either CBS or ESPN you have access to their sports personalities why not have them on as a guest? Why not break in and go live for Coach Kill.

But you ask will it pay for itself? There are advertisers who are Gopher Media Partners who would probably chip in.

I don't know how Minnesotans waking up this morning to a front (sports) page Strib article on Penn State football helps the Gopher cause, but I will take your word for it. I read the article on Carlie Wagner instead.

I get your point, but Kare 11 just spent thousands of dollars to put a fireplace and bar in their backyard. Rent an Altima for Dave Schwartz and get him a room at the Red Roof Inn.

There's also the fact that news companies cover what their constituencies care about. As much as so many here want it to be, the Gophers don't move the needle for the large majority of the public. People whine like my 2-year-old daughter about the Vikings and how much coverage they get, but they are multiples and multiples more popular than the Gophers. If the Gophers become more popular and demand media coverage, they will get it. Whining about coverage that isn't warranted accomplishes nothing.

There is some merit to chastising metro-area entities for their coverage levels (KARE, KSTP, etc.) but the thought that media in Rochester, Mankato, and St. Cloud should send people to Chicago for Big Ten media days is, quite simply, nothing less than asinine.

But what if we whine LOUDER!

wht about that complete tool from Wisconsin who asked Kill about losing the last 10 to the Badgers - what a tool!

I live out of state, and literally every time I talk to a sports fan about the Gophers, something is mentioned about Kill's health. It's almost like they offer condolences. Something like, "Oh man, it's too bad about your coach. I really like him." If anything, there is a huge opportunity to educate on epilepsy.

Yeah, but he's a tool of the Badgers. If we want that to stop...beat 'em. Next year he will either ask about # 11 or ask if we think we can beat them a 2nd time. I'd rather it were the second.

Do I get an F for not paying attention to anyone's coverage?

Channel 11 played video of Kill speaking at the Media Day.

Kare 11 changes from incomplete to a C+

They being an NBC affiliate may have gotten a feed from WMAQ in Chicago or paid for the tape with credit from BGTN. They did not have the resources at the Kickoff that ESPN and CSB Sports had.

KFAN had an hour yesterday (6:00 pm - 7:00 pm) devoted to the Gophers and big ten media days.

Having given them a B+ And being the radio home of The Gophers I have one question was the hour open to phone calls? If so, then the move to an A.

Phone calls? Serious? Phone calls on the radio suck.

Why would KFAN spend money to send a guy to Chicago to do all kinds of in-person interviews with important Gopher football people only to take phone calls from people back in Minneapolis who have no idea what's happening in Chicago?

Let's see, do I want to hear from Leidner, Thompson, Cobb, Kill, and anyone else in Chicago....or do I want to hear from George in Golden Valley, Andy in Apple Valley, and Sam in Spring Valley. I think that's a fairly easy call to make.

Phone calls should rank about 239th on the list of "Top 100 Criteria For Husker70 To Grade Media Day Coverage."

How does Tim Brando do it? National College Coaches interviewed and your calls. The problem is not the call in, its the production and talent handling the calls.

Does the Star Tribune exist to "help the Gopher cause"? No, that's not their job.

Not really. The call-in portion of Brando's show is easily the worst part of the show, as it is with most radio shows.

The really good shows don't need calls. The really good hosts carry the show on their own.
