per McKewon:

Recruits had so many questions, they stored them on their phones and scrolled down the list as they hosted Ohio State coaches in their living rooms.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has massive shoes to fill. And few coaches — ever — have been better than Day’s predecessor, Urban Meyer, on the recruiting trail.

So as Day recounted last Wednesday the story of recruits peppering him with questions, he supplied the same answer he has since he took over for Meyer.

“We think we have the most comprehensive program from A to Z in the country and the infrastructure is here and the plan is not to change that,” Day said. “The plan is not to come in and blow all that up. There’s a reason why there’s been so much success here in the past, and we want to keep that going.”

Much of the media has been calling for Meyer’s departure — by firing or retirement — so when Meyer chose to hand the program over to Day, there was a sense of, well, mission accomplished. Meyer’s major missteps in the handling of former assistant coach Zach Smith’s domestic violence allegations, plus Meyer’s stress-related headaches, weakened Ohio State.

That doesn’t mean the Buckeyes will stay the dominant program in the Big Ten. In fact, the door is open, especially in recruiting, where Ohio State did well — signing three five-star prospects and ranking as 247 Sports composite’s No. 12 class nationally — but didn’t pummel the rest of the league like it usually does on the trail.

Day is a polished, impressive young coach. He has a good staff of recruiters, including defensive line coach Larry Johnson. And Day has chosen to put a priority on in-state recruiting, which is smart, since he’ll lack Meyer’s coast-to-coast recruiting cachet.

But still — the door is open. Michigan, with 25 signees and two more commits, seems likely to have the league’s No. 1 recruiting class. Penn State should stay at No. 2. And the Big Ten West is making moves.
