Just noticed Mbakwe is wearing Trent Tucker's retired number. Why is that? I'm sure its been addressed before, but whats the reason

I was wondering the same thing. Anybody have any insight?

Wasn't Tucker's number retired last year? Was he grandfathered in?

Ha ha...saw the same thing when they were talking about retiring Mencel's number. Would love to hear an explanation.

On the title of the page, yes. But if you look at the smaller print under each player, it says "jersey retired." It's a technicality, but it keeps the number open since only the "jersey" is retired, whatever that means.

Yea, I was wondering about that difference in language.

Randy Carter??

Kidding--I believe they require a player to have a degree before the honor is bestowed. I recall that Willie was working on his degree recently, but I don't think he has it yet.

Phew! I thought it was referring to Devoe Joseph!

Yeah I think there's a similar thing at UNC where there's a difference between a retired number and retired jersey. Retired jersey numbers can still be used, but retired numbers cannot.

Didn't Rick Rickert want to wear #14 but couldn't because it was Lou Hudson's old number that was retired? So he ended up wearing #1 at home and #4 on the road. Seems like a double-standard, unless Lou's number was retired vs. only Trent's jersey.

Retiring 'jerseys' is a joke. My jersey from HS was 'retired' too when the school went with a different design the next year. No one will ever again wear that jersey.

If I remember correctly(not a sure thing) when Sweet Lou was honored they actualy retired the number. Years later they changed it to retired jersey, like many other teams. Not sure if the older retired 'numbers' are still the same or if they have evolved into retired jerseys.
