At the game today, we were watching the end of the Cincinatti - Pitt game on the TV in the club room. There was a group of us standing by the TV and a guy asked us the score and told us to cheer for Cincinatti, as a Cincinatti win and a win by Texas today would help give the Gopher football team a better bowl spot (he said more than likely the Alamo Bowl).

Anyway, we looked over and it was Joel Maturi. I have never met him before, but was impressed wth how friendly he was with the group.

Anyway, I asked him a question about Bostick, during the discussion, he said that Mbakwe would not be back until the court case is totally settled (we all knew that) but then he said he did not know if White will play at all this year, stating, "he has a lot more to do to become eligible."

Anyway, it didn't sound like he was going to make a decision any day like we have heard elsewhere.

Maturi needs to learn to shut his mouth. A, "no comment" would suffice in that kind of arena.

It's more fun to say something like Maturi said and watch the GH posters go bananas.

I ran into Maturi at a women's gymnastics event that I attended with my daughter a couple of years ago. I found him very friendly. I didn't ask him anything of importance, but I thought it was nice of him to exchange pleasantries. I don't think a whole lot of D-1 ADs are that approachable.

Why would no comment be better? Open and honest is just fine. It's better than a completely tight lipped AD that won't give us anything to go off of. Rumors will swirl of course, but the more facts that are out there, the less BS floats around.

He got us a new stadium so I am happy. Who might be in line to replace him when he retires?

Great answer Dr. Don. Actually Maturi is refreshingly honest...not always directly but you can get the implications. If you e-mail him, it's amazing that he answers quickly and honestly within the expectations of an AD. And, he did helped to bring us Tubby.

I agree with both sides of this debate. It is wonderful that he is warm and friendly and talks with "average" fans but at times, especially, when dealing with high profile players and there legal issues a "No Comment" would be much better. Better to not say to much and get yourself in trouble.

Hard to get in trouble when he is the one making the rules in this case. I agree though that he might want to save some news for a different time and place.

He's so ridiculously kind. I worry he's just too nice for his job.
