Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but Maturi's quotes over the last 2 days make me wonder if Maturi is waivering in bringing Brew back. I think the 2nd quote more so that the first because Maturi is explicitly stating that the guys who are contributiong are Mason recruits, even though he thinks talent is better.

"He's our football coach, and I expect him to be our football coach," Maturi said. "There's always issues there. You know me -- I don't like to be dishonest. And I don't want to be [Alabama coach] Nick Saban and say 'yes,' and then two weeks later say 'no.' But I expect [Brewster] to be our football coach.

"I think I know enough about football to say that we have more better football players today than when [Brew-ster] arrived," Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi said. "What we haven't had, recently, is a Marion Barber, a Laurence Maroney, a [Mark] Setterstrom. We haven't had players of that caliber [emerge]. We had [Eric] Decker, who Mason recruited. But there is no question we have more, better talent and our depth is better."

I read it differently...

I read that last quote...meaning that he likes the increase in talent and wants to give Brewster 2 more years to have another Gopher great emerge because of Brewsters recruiting.

I think Cooper will be one of the next ones!

Maturi was the same last year when Tubby was being courted by Virginia or Maryland, iirrc.

When I read the headlines saying things like "Brewster to return in 2010," and then I read the quotes by Maturi, I immediately felt like Maturi's comments did not state in any definite way that Brewster will be back. Maturi's comments actually made me more skeptical about Brewster's future than before i read them.

I guess different people can read the same thing and come to different conclusions - but, again, that just points out how indefinite the choice of words was.

In my opinion, and it's nothing more than that, he's leaving open the possibility that if we get humiliated in Iowa and the bowl game and a Tubby Smith-caliber coach falls in our lap, Maturi can make the switch. I'm not saying that would be the right thing to do, that's just my impression. I still believe Brew is our coach next year with 99% certainty.

Maturi talks too damned much. He seems to think that every question require him to get on a soapbox and tell us everything he knows or thinks. A simple, "As I've said all along we evaluate each coach at the end of the season" would suffice.

Agree...this just seems to be how Joel is. Its not the first time he's said more than maybe he should have or failed to parse his statements in the "normal" AD way.

He should be Henry the VIII and chop off Brew's head

Also agree. I've written this before but I was at Gopher baseball NCAA Tourney game in Long Beach, CA several years ago. There were about 40 Gopher fans there and I ended up talking to Maturi for a couple of innings. He made some comments to me about Monson at the time, which were more than I would have expected from an AD. Its funny, the quote above is precisely what the interim UNLV AD said about his football coach a couple of weeks ago. Of course the coach was fired before the end of the season, but I still believe that the comment was appropriate.

At the same time I find his honesty very refreshing. While most administrators/executives play it safe in the media, he says what is on his mind. Further, it's my understanding that he personally responds to fan e-mails to him and does so in a very timely manner. Again, I think that's refreshing. I'd rather have an AD that talks too much than one that says nothing at all (even when they talk).

He talks because he has to convince everybody how smart he is. At an alumni picnic before the Air Force game he was asking for support and money (again) and went on to blast the former players as losers, way to get suppport!

maturi has been like this since I can remember. these comments are similar to what he's been saying about every coach since he got here. Does that mean he's not going to make a change? No, it just means that those comments are meaningless in trying to figure out his intentions.

Has anyone considered that he may have his idea, but it's not 100% his decision. Bruiniks may need to be consulted once the evaluation period is over. So what if Maturi likes to hedge his statements so he doesn't look like a fool in the slim chance that he gets over ruled? We just read too much into this crap. This could be the same statement he makes every year, only now we're getting closer to the time when a decision actually has to get made. In fact it sounds very similar to what he said after people were clammering for an extention after the 7-1 start last year.

In other thoughts, "more better" really?

He's letting people know what's caught his eye without tipping his hand on his decision. Smart play.

Either way, Brew will be back. He needs to be allowed time to let his players develop. Firing a coach after 3 season (and 2 bowl invites) would be pretty dumb for a 2nd tier program to do.

I actually kind of interpreted it to mean Maturi doesn't like Nick Saban. Other than that, I don't see much there that would lead me to believe Brew is any real trouble at this point.

It caught my eye too but then realized that if you say it aloud with the right inflection it's the equivalent of saying "we have more players who are better than we've had before." It's the problem when you say something but later see it in writing ... colloquialisms don't come across very well.
