Maturi: "I do wish football and basketball were more successful than they've been."

Haven't we all? Only difference is I don't have a say in running the organization. Teague is going to look good next year when the men's hockey team wins the title (if Bjugstad comes back they will be favored) and the ladies defend their title (Best player in the world joining them as a freshman). Now if we could win 4 football games...

Most clueless but politically correct AD in U history, and that is a high hurdle. Honestly, he thinks the fact they were not successful is kind of a problem, but not really a measure of how he did his job; mostly inevitable. He did a decent job job with sports that pay no bills, and that no one actually watches. (Actually, he did a good job with some of those sports, not even a really good job there.) He managed to keep a coach who has turned an almost breakeven WBB program into another nonreveenue sport.
Hopefully, Kaler has higher standards.

To quote someone: "No shi* Sherlock." Wow, to be the AD and finally figure out that the football team and the Basketball squad need to win.

Hopefully Teague will be smart and focus primarily on the Cash Cows - football and basketball.

My biggest problem with Maturi is he seemed to act as though the big two football and basketball should be handled the same as the non-revenue sports.

corcoran1 hit it on the head. PC correct, but big 10 ignorant.

It's really depressing how Maturi took such juggernaut football and basketball programs and drove them into the ditch.

He manages to enrage, even after he has been stripped of power.

He wishes football and basketball were more successful?!
Maybe he should have DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

He's a nice guy D3 athletics director who was 100 ft over his head the moment he took the job. The fact he isn't hated and reviled more in this town has more to do with the apathy he grew and the mediocrity he oversaw during his years here than anything.

So clueless. So damaging.

I wonder when his hero's parade is in Madison?

Teague better clean house and wipe the stains of the last 10 years off the second he gets into place.

out of curiousity, whos the best player in the world?

If wishes were horses Beggars would ride:
If turnips were watches I would wear one by my side
And if if's and an's were pots and pans, The tinker would never work

Joel spent too much time, too much money on protecting his feminine side. See boat house. Maybe just maybe that has come to and end and now we have come to realize the eighty/twenty rule applies. Eighty percent of the funding comes from 20 percent of the sports. Therefore they should get the biggest share of the pie.

Yes, I did. But it has been over 20 years for the University of Minnesota to discover and understand the problem. In fact, it probably goes back to 1967 and the installation of one Malcom Moos.

My picture was aimed at Joel Maturi, not you husker70. Sorry if I offended.

It's really depressing that someone as learned as you like to claim to be resort to this type of BS. Maturi could have built the programs, but did not. In fact, he took the limited success in football we'd had and rather than build on it, take the next step, he did the opposite.

In Basketball, he did just enough not to get in the way of the Tubby Smith hiring. There's been some bad luck involved in what's happened since, some bone headed administration issues that were tied to Maturi, and some failure on Tubby's part to take the next step. This next season will be Joel's defining moment. That program was truly in a shambles when Badger Joel took over and he didn't do enough soon enough to pull out of the nose dive.

In football, the team was average with two notable above average seasons. We had an offensive philosophy that worked, and a defense that didn't. We had been to several minor bowls and were fan support and a significant improvement in defense from becoming truly relevant in the post season world of college football. We were returning to campus, had beaten every big ten team for the first time in decades, and were poised to take the next step.

He did not drive that program into the ditch. He dug a huge whole. Pushed the program in. Buried it under a ton of concrete. Then Dirt. Then more concrete. Then a Badger W. He didn't derail a juggernaut, but he did everything in his power to make sure the next step wasn't taken.

In summary, at best to your comments, Joel may not have created the problems the programs had, but he certainly did next to nothing to solve those problems and more often than not, exacerbated the problems. He gets no flier on this. I too wish the programs would have won more, then again, I've been wishing Joel Maturi was demoted to be the very good assistant AD in charge of women's athletics as he should have been years ago. If that had happened, good chance the programs would have won more.
