Upgrading arenas at U

Maturi also talked about how the additional money the Gophers athletic department is earning from the preferred seating system, where fans are paying extra to sit in choice seats, is being used to purchase new scoreboards and sound systems for Williams Arena and Mariucci Arena.

"I'll tell you what, and I mean this very honestly, you and everyone else who enter Mariucci Arena and Williams Arena next year will say, 'Wow,'" Maturi said. "Just like we did when we entered TCF Bank Stadium and saw the great scoreboards, we're going to have state-of-the-art scoreboards.

"We're going to put in ribbon boards, as they're called, we're putting in new sound systems, which was extremely needed in Mariucci and in Williams as well, but people will see that we've utilized the monies that they're providing to us to upgrade Williams Arena and Mariucci. It's the only way we're able to do that. So there will be a wow factor when people return next fall to those venues."

Go Gophers!!

"I'll tell you what, and I mean this very honestly..."

As opposed to just sort of honestly or maybe not honestly at all.

Apparently Joel doesn't always say what he honestly believes.

Looks like we're going to be giving Ohio State a good thumping.

So I'll no longer see the sign that I think says "sex change" at first glance?

I'd imagine you may continue to see this.

Has a new scoreboard at Williams Arena been talked about as a need for a long time? When thinking about the basketball facilities it's never been something that I've had a big beef with... maybe others feel differently? What's the price tag on this thing? $4 million? Wonder when the purchase was decided on...

Very nice. I like those a lot. Williams Arena will look a lot better with the new scoreboard, and the ribbon board to replace those old signs. Both needed new sound systems really bad.

I like how the hockey team is shooting 50% and the basketball team is up 101-79 and it isnt even half way thru the 2nd half!!

I know a new scoreboard has been talked about since I was in school, almost 10 years ago. They went the cheap route and just upgraded the video boards on each scoreboard. The sound systems have been a big need for some time.

Concur on the need for a better audio system. As far as the scoreboard, the one we've had seems pretty new to me. Wasn't it added even AFTER the building renovation? It is/was fully adequate as far as I'm concerned.

The in-place scorecube was installed after the 1994-ish renovation.

The video boards in the center replaced the light panels during the 2005 season. In fact, the first game with the video boards was Vince Grier's one-man wrecking crew job against the weasels.

A more subtle change was before the 10-11 season, all the digit panels in the scoreboards were replaced with LED panels. Word on the street is that when the U tried to buy more bulbs, they were informed by White Way Sign (the manufacturer) that you can buy more bulbs, but they are no longer in production. Hence the move to LED digits.

And like some others here, I concur that new audio in both Williams and Mariucci was a much more critical need than new scoreboards. They could have gotten away with only the sound updated this summer and been fine.

leave it to the u to put westbrook (a guy who has been gone for three years) and iverson (a guy who transferred) as the photo to promote something good.

were pictures of kris collins not available?

Every time Maturi opens his mouth I say "Wow", what a doorknob. Sooooo, how long before we never have to hear him quoted again?

To Ohio State, no less!

My hope is that when we enter Williams Arena in 2012-13 the reason we'll be saying "Wow" will have more to do with the Gopher team on the floor than it does about the scoreboard in the sky.

I never understood how people can find ways to complain about upgrades in facilities...

The new scoreboard looks great, the old one was worn out and tired looking, just gave off a janky vibe.

I never understood how people can find ways to complain about upgrades in facilities

It's a perfectly valid complaint when there is a limited amount of funding to go around and people think that other things should take priority.

How is $80 Million a "limited amount of funding"? I can see the argument that the practice facility should have been a higher priority, but the funding is hardly limited, especially when you consider servicing the debt on a practice facility would be less than 1% of the budget.

How is $80 Million a "limited amount of funding"?

Is it unlimited? No. Therefore, by definition, it is limited.

People are having extreme difficulty with the English language on GH today.

but the funding is hardly limited

Incorrect. It is exactly, and fully, limited.

Equivocation. Would it seem appropriate to refer to Trump's funds as limited because he doesn't have an infinite amount of money?

I would say it's about time to upgrade the scoreboard and sound in both facilities. The sound in Williams was especially bad, when the annoucements were more a dull roar than actual discernable english. Likewise, the smallish and low-resolution screen was pretty brutal to watch replays on. Now hopefully they actually use the scoreboard for replays, stats, etc. instead of more ads (see TCF)
