Match 17: Gophers visit Wisconsin (11-20-24)

I hate Wisconsin with the white hot intensity of a thousand sun's. Please win this match Goohers.

Dang---tough loss. I know we lost a large presence in Carter Booth to Wisconsin. But where are our big "Amazon" women patrolling the front row? It seems the best teams in the conference have tall athletic women that dwarf anything we have. Am I just imaging this?

And does coach Cook have any recruits that can match the size of what Nebraska, Wisconsin and Penn State roll out there every year?

Lost 18-20 in the 5th but proud of the way they hung with it in a tough environment. Wisky losses 5 starters next year so I expect the Gophers to take both matches in 2025.

I can guarantee you that they are not worried, Sheffield will probably get one or two highly touted transfers to come to Madison.

The gophers have gone 5 sets twice with the badgers this season and both have ended in extra points. I haven’t seen any other team be that competitive with the badgers all year (except Nebraska beat down). Even with 10 losses they should get a top 16 seed for the tournament as they have no bad losses.

I think the Badgers have a rotation where they have a 6'4", 6'9", and a 6'7" girl on the front line. Yikes! Try hitting over or around that!

It was a great match between two rivals and in a hostile environment. Tough to lose a match like that but we should feel good about the competitiveness and high level of play. The Gophers did a good job of receiving, digging, and scrapping again, which seems like they have made a big improvement over the first 2/3s of the season. They need to improve on holding leads, keeping opponents from going on big runs, and closing out sets. They look like they are peaking and can make a nice run in the NCAA tournament barring a bad draw and location.

I don't want to be Debbie Downer but Wisconsin was missing their starting Libero and DS. The gal that started at Libero played OK, not great. Imagine us with Palabiyik and Thibault out.
