No matter how it happened, Minnesota Gopher football fans ought to be very happy that the program has transitioned from Mason to Brewster to Kill. Mason was way too comfortable winning just enough games each year (the minority of which were against Big 10 teams) to go to a second or third tier bowl game.
Brewster obviously had no idea about how to be a head coach. He did do some reasonably good recruiting, however, and did emphasize talent on the defensive side of the ball. He had a solid defense in 2009 and the 2011 defense will start to approach that unit next year. They certainly did in the Iowa game. Brewster and Horton also red-shirted a great many of ther recruits.
Jerry Kill is BOTH experienced and hungry. He is the same age as Gary Patterson. They have both been in coaching for about the same length of time. Kill was the best man in Patterson's wedding. Does anyone here think that Kill is burning inside to accomplish some of the same successes Patterson has had at TCU?
I think Kill's staff is also burning with desire. Both his OC and his DC could become candidates for Division 1(A) coaching jobs in the relatively near future if they're all successful at Minnesota.
Sure I'm speculating. Sure I'm enthusiastic. But what is the alternative? If Kill is the next Patterson, Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder or Barry Alvarez, sit back and watch. We'll all learn a lot and really, really enjoy the ride. If Kill isn't any of those coaches, I'll guess we'll give it another go in four or five years.
As an aside, I've read recently where Gary Patterson reconsidered the offer he'd turned down to come to Minnesota after Mason was fired but Brewster had already been offered the job. Wouldn't that have been something? But, on the other hand, how do you go from offering the job to Patterson and then offering it to Brewster? That's how a football program goes four or five decades without playing on New Year's Day.

As much as I think that Maturi should have been fired long ago (and continues to disappoint regularly), I will always defend this hire as being a good hire. There are no guarantees, but from what I've read and seen coach Kill gets it. I have been very impressed by his credentials, his approach, the loyalty of his assistants, etc. I am very much looking forward to the next few years!!

This is a bit of a stretch, but how much differently would Kill be looked at if he looked different and sounded different? I think the Gophers got a diamond in the rough.

It's funny how the pendulum swings, isn't it? When you look at personality types, coaching acumen, salesmanship, coaching experience, etc, you see an obvious swinging pendulum in prioritization:
Mason: Stoic Personality, Proven Coaching Acumen, Moderate to Avg Salesman, Broad Coaching Experience

*Pendulum Swing*

Brewster: RahRah Personality, Unproven Coaching Acumen, Big Salesman, Unproven Coaching Experience

*Pendulum Swing*

Kill: Stoic Personality, Proven Coaching Acumen, Moderate to Avg Salesman, Broad Coaching Experience

Go Gophers!

Maturi improved Gopher football twice by first hiring Brewster, and then Kill. Joel started out with Mason who made it perfectly clear to Gopher fans right from the start that Minnesota was just an intermediate job and his goal was to coach somewhere else. Accordingly, he put minimal effort into recruiting, coaching defense, getting along with the media, and promoting Gopher football. For the most part Minnesota high school coaches didn't like Mason and it showed in his recruiting results. Furthermore, Mason couldn't have cared less about the storied history of Gopher football and never made an effort to connect with former players. His Big 10 won/loss record of 32 - 48 was pathetic. Say what you want about Brewster at least he aimed high and worked 24/7 trying to turn around a second rate football program which hasn't won a Big 10 Championship for over 40 years.

Would've been better to have not screwed up the Brew hire in the first place.

WHY did maturi let Mason's contract run down for three years and THEN, at the last possible second extend his contract long term only to buy that contract extension out one year later????? maturi IS the problem. Or, perhaps maturi's BOSS was REALLY the problem. Thank heavens prexy b is finally out on his butt in June. And, IF Prexy K has an ounce of sense, he will end the cycle of failure and put maturi out on his tail as one of his first official items of business in beginning to straighten out the administratve nightmare at the U of M.

Here is a picture of George Bush eating a kitten:

So he could get the legislature to approve funding for TCF stadium

I think the most epic collapse in bowl game history just might have had something to do with it.

Not saying 32-48 wasn't pathetic, but look at the history we have had in the Big Ten by 5 year increments since 1982.

Coach Years | Record
Salem, Holtz & Gutey 82-86 | 13-30
Gutenkunst 87-91 | 13-25-2
Wacker 92-96 | 8-32
Mason 97-01 | 14-26
Mason 02-06 | 18-22
Brewster/Horton 07-10 | 8-24

Mason made the program more respectable, but someone else was needed to move it up and unfortunately Brewster was not the answer.

Under Mason you forgot the biggest differences between him and Kill, so I added them for you:

Mason: Stoic Personality, Proven Coaching Acumen, Moderate to Avg Salesman, Broad Coaching Experience, fake baked, ultra white teeth, a$$hole

*Pendulum Swing*

Brewster: RahRah Personality, Unproven Coaching Acumen, Big Salesman, Unproven Coaching Experience

Kill: Stoic Personality, Proven Coaching Acumen, Moderate to Avg Salesman, Broad Coaching Experience, self-deprecating, hard working, not ultra white teeth

You had to go there with the teeth? If you look at Coach Kill and squint, you'd swear he was a Brit!

:D

It started as a rip on Mason and his extra pearly whites. Coach Kill and his less than perfect set of teeth were collateral damage.
