No matter how it happened, Minnesota Gopher football fans ought to be very happy that the program has transitioned from Mason to Brewster to Kill. Mason was way too comfortable winning just enough games each year (the minority of which were against Big 10 teams) to go to a second or third tier bowl game.
Brewster obviously had no idea about how to be a head coach. He did do some reasonably good recruiting, however, and did emphasize talent on the defensive side of the ball. He had a solid defense in 2009 and the 2011 defense will start to approach that unit next year. They certainly did in the Iowa game. Brewster and Horton also red-shirted a great many of ther recruits.
Jerry Kill is BOTH experienced and hungry. He is the same age as Gary Patterson. They have both been in coaching for about the same length of time. Kill was the best man in Patterson's wedding. Does anyone here think that Kill is burning inside to accomplish some of the same successes Patterson has had at TCU?
I think Kill's staff is also burning with desire. Both his OC and his DC could become candidates for Division 1(A) coaching jobs in the relatively near future if they're all successful at Minnesota.
Sure I'm speculating. Sure I'm enthusiastic. But what is the alternative? If Kill is the next Patterson, Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder or Barry Alvarez, sit back and watch. We'll all learn a lot and really, really enjoy the ride. If Kill isn't any of those coaches, I'll guess we'll give it another go in four or five years.
As an aside, I've read recently where Gary Patterson reconsidered the offer he'd turned down to come to Minnesota after Mason was fired but Brewster had already been offered the job. Wouldn't that have been something? But, on the other hand, how do you go from offering the job to Patterson and then offering it to Brewster? That's how a football program goes four or five decades without playing on New Year's Day.
