per ESPN:

Maryland's financial issues aren't going away any time soon, and the move to the Big Ten hardly will be an immediate panacea.

Maryland on Tuesday released a report put together by Loh's commission on Maryland's integration to the Big Ten. It states that the athletic program won't be on solid financial footing until the 2017-18 academic year. Maryland athletics operated at a $21 million deficit in the past year, a shortfall that can be attributed largely to the revenue the ACC is withholding as part of its plan to collect a $52 million exit fee from Maryland.

From The Washington Post:

According to the report, the university has loaned the athletic department -- which has a goal of being self-sufficient -- upwards of $21 million to overcome the deficit, with additional loans of $20 million potentially required if the ACC continues to withhold revenue. The loans are funded by the university’s Non-State Auxiliary Funds, which are collected from school-run programs such as parking tickets and dining services, according to a university spokesman.

"That's borrowed money," Loh said Monday in a telephone interview. "That's not a gift to athletics. Unless we get [money] back from the ACC, athletics has to pay that back."

Maryland Big Ten Commission report: Football practice facility seemingly still years away

On July 1, 2014, the University of Maryland will formally join the Big Ten. This means that, on July 1, 2014, the University of Maryland will formally become the only Big Ten school without an indoor practice facility, or without plans to build one.

The biggest potential upgrade on the horizon, squarely in the crosshairs of many fans, coaches and players alike, building such a facility must be financed by a capital fundraising campaign, and not university money, according to a report released by the school on Tuesday afternoon.

Go Gophers!!

I am SO HAPPY they got Randy Edsall instead of us. I know that doesn't have anything to do with this story, but I digress.

EDIT: I never really liked the addition of Maryland & Rutgers in the first place....

This makes me laugh. A month or so ago there was a Maryland fan on OTE saying how "THE BIG TEN NEEDED MARYLAND. THEY PRACTICALLY BEGGED FOR MARYLAND."

They wanted the TV Market, assumed you pointed that out to him. :)

It's tough being in a major urban area -- as we all know.

For MD, this deal was never about the short term...they were losing money hand over fist and there was no long term vision for the ACC that offered them hope. 20 Years from now when B1G schools are making $30 mil more per year than ACC schools on their TV deal...that's when it will be shown that MD made the right decision and UNC effed up.

Maryland certainly made the right decision, but the Big Ten most certainly did not. Ugh with the latest two additions.

Hard for me to hate it...two more potential local games for me to see the Gophs. Both less than 3 hours from my house.

Maryland is a fixer-upper athletic program. Like a rusty 1936 Packard, it's got great potential to become very valuable in the future, if you're patient.

Getting Maryland was all about diminishing the ACC as a threat in the conference expansion wars. Maryland will have more value in the league long-term if the B1G can also manage to scoop up Virginia and/or North Carolina at some point. (Don't tell me the lawyers can't get it done with enough funding)

My opinion was that these additions were about this: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/arti...g-ten-network-strives-for-national-reputation

Essentially, it gets the BTN close to the 60 million viewership mark by 2015.

I like the analogy. My uncle has two beautiful black Packards in his garage. They are something special.

Maryland is down now. But in the coming years, they will probably be making money and going places as their administration know how to put quality basketball and football teams in front of their fans.

Maryland took the path of minor sports way past The Boat House. Chris Voelz would be envious. It is basically a basketball school for revenue, the football team has sold around 17, 500 season tickets. Where is the revenue going to come from? Women's basketball? Women's Tennis? It will take them at least till 2018 to figure the Big 10 out, if it ever happens. Rutgers on the other hand could be sneaky good.
