Did Gray play tonight against the Vikes? If so ... does he have any chance of making the team.

he made a nice block on one of the niner's tds. didnt watch closely enough otherwise.

Played a lot in the 4th quarter. Each time a QB was looking his way, he had to scramble, and I don't think he ended up with a catch. However, I did watch his blocking quite a bit, and even though he looked a little slow on the snap, I think he really held his own, if not more, with his blocking.

Hope he beats the cut. Are there any other Gophers with a chance to land jobs?

Didn't watch closely enough, if what you guys watched Is true, he may end up on practice squad.

IMO, that's probably the best he can hope for. He is still a major work in progress as a tight end but he's such a physical freak, I don't think they would want to totally cut him until they get a chance to see him develop more.

There is no doubt he will be cut. The question is will he make a practice squad? I think his future is probably north of the border but good luck to him either way.

I thought his blocking was pretty good, considering he doesn't have a wealth of experience doing it. I think he gets at least the practice squad.

I have watched Troy Stoudemire play for the bengals, think he has a good chance there as well.

I believe Stoudemire has already been cut. I heard his name mentioned on Hard Knocks when they were discussing guys that had no chance and he isn't on their current roster.

More ex gophers in the nfl the better. He blew 2 blocks early but after that started to look pretty solid. Not sure he does anything but practice roster this year but I would bet he makes the final cut next year

Yes, unfortunately Stoudemire has been cut.

Gotcha. My bad, it was early and I should have went and checked the roster. Laziness at 7:47 a.m. at it's finest. :)

I read that players make a minimum of $5,000 per week on the practice squad, so not a bad gig.

MarQueis is in a tough spot in San Francisco. They have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL (notable exception at WR), and they have 3 TE's that were virtually guaranteed to make the roster in Vernon Davis, Garrett Celek, and 2nd round pick Vance McDonald. He might have a shot at the practice squad, but the Niners had a ton of draft picks this past year and will likely be trying to sneak a few of them through waivers and on to the practice squad.

I think he's a unique enough talent that some team will give him a shot on the practice squad. I still think the best shot for him is a team that doesn't have a mobile QB on the roster. For that team, Gray can learn TE during the week and also play QB on the scout team when that team is going to play the 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, Panthers, etc. A team that would seem to make quite a bit of sense might be the Saints. The other hurdle MarQueis has to get over is learning how to play special teams. If he's going to make 53, he's going to need to be able to add value by being a contributor on teams.

Marqueis Might Make The 53-Man

At least one Bay Area blogger thinks he will make the 53-man.

Marqueis makes this 53-man projection

Here's the excerpt:

Tight End (4): Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Marqueis Gray

Cut: None

That’s right, four tight ends. Drops have been a problem for Celek throughout camp. He hasn’t shined as a blocker during the preseason, either. Harbaugh often mentions how players often improve drastically from year one to year two, and that doesn’t seem to have happened in Celek’s case. But they’re invested in him and he contributed as a rookie, so that’s why they’ll probably keep him. Gray needs some polish, but he’s big and has taken well to the tight end position. Plus, the former QB has the kind of versatility Harbaugh covets. If the 49ers decide to carry three tight ends, I think Gray will be (and should be) the choice.

Wow, so he thinks Gray makes it even if they only keep 3. That kind of suprises me considering I saw Celek played ahead of Gray in the Vikings game, although he did have a bad drop. I'll be pulling for MarQueis, that's for sure.

LOVE IT! Rooting for him pretty hard to make the team!

I don't know anything about Celek, but I assume he's been playing the position for a while. If it's a case where they're playing rather close in camp, you'd think Gray's versatility and rawness at the position would make him the higher ceiling guy. If they wanna go young and more developmental in their lower depth spots, I like his chances.

man thats unfortunate. Was hoping he could succeed at the next level.

Very sad to hear... he was sold coming to Minnesota because he was a great Spread QB but we switched philosophies too many times... always felt like him & Weber were thrown into bad situations. Weber was brought in to hand off the football & make play-action passes & instead is forced into a Spread Offense he was never designed to play & with Gray he was brought here to run the Spread & instead was thrown into a cluster of different running philosophies... neither fit either QB at their cores... both could've been much better had they just had some consistent coaching...

Yeah. It really sucks thinking about what could've been, with Gray especially.

He's now on the 53 man roster for the Browns.

Great news for Marquis! Really happy for him, and working under Chud and Norv Turner will do wonders for his development as a tight end. That's honestly an almost best case scenario if it wasn't for the fact that everything Cleveland touches seems to turn to dung.

This made me laugh. Thanks.
