per Q&A with Marcus:

You dealt with a first-year football coach at Syracuse with Dino Barbers, and now you’ll have the same here at Minnesota with Tracy Claeys. Is there some benefit to that?

Every year you work, you learn something new. I think those experiences are helpful. I look forward to meeting coach Claeys and spending time with him. It’s important that we have football, men’s basketball, men’s hockey and women’s basketball achieving at a high level. We want to do everything we can to support them.

You didn’t get to hire Claeys, but does it make you more comfortable that he was already on a staff that had success here with Jerry Kill?

I applaud Beth (Goetz). I think she made a great decision (hiring Claeys). I think Beth was put in a situation as interim AD, and she ran this department well. I look forward to working with her and spending time with her. But again, from the outside looking in, I think it was the right decision. Coach Claeys has been with coach Kill for a long time. He was very familiar with that system and that foundation. I applaud Beth for the decision she made because it wasn’t an easy decision.

Have you spoken to coach Kill? Would you like to still have him around the Gophers?

I did have a chance to speak with coach Kill very briefly over the phone. I look forward to meeting with him. Obviously, I know he’s highly respected, and he should be. He did a phenomenal job here at Minnesota. And I look forward to meeting him and spending more time with him. I’d like to visit more with him, learn about him and some of the things he did to build a solid foundation. I’ll be interested to learn and see what he did to bring that program back to wh
