per Marcus:
What happens if Pitino benches both of his seniors? What if he went with a starting lineup of Kevin Dorsey, Mason, Dupree McBrayer, Murphy and Konate? Will that make a difference? Maybe it’s worth a try. The Gophers couldn’t play worse than they did for stretches Saturday. Benching veterans worked in the past. Remember Austin Hollins a few years ago.
The blame is spread around, though, according to Pitino.
“It’s not the seniors’ fault,” he said. “Buggs is our only junior in the program. It’s not necessarily his fault. It’s everybody. It’s a collection of everybody. We understand that we’re really, really young. We get it. But we got to do something about it. Being young doesn’t excuse you from playing hard all the time, getting physical, rebounding. So those are things we’ve got to continue to be committed to doing.”
— When Pitino says he’ll be looking at everyone in the program does that mean walk-ons, too? Former Hopkins guard Stephon Sharp hasn’t played in the Big Ten, but Pitino said he was going to be in the rotation in conference play. Could we see more minutes for Sharp? The 6-foot-4 freshman played a career-high 10 minutes in Minnesota’s last win against Chicago State. My guess is that fellow freshman Ahmad Gilbert Jr. could also be getting more minutes in place of Buggs, who supposedly hasn’t practiced well lately.
