"Tubby Smith meeting with Hopkins' Joe Coleman right now. Santa Clara coach Keating met with JC earlier. Getting close to decision maybe."

"I'm hearing the Gophers are looking pretty good. This would be big get for Tubby obviously with Coleman being top 100 recruit."

"If Tubby lands Coleman and gets TN guard Andre Hollins after visit to Gophers this week, then this might be biggest recruiting week for him."

Go Gophers!!

Nice. Coleman, Hollins, Tharpe would be a great haul.

Come on Joe!!

Hopefully, Joe goes with Minnesota.

Just makes sense. Keeps the family tradition alive. Locks up the top in-state talent for the Gophers. Puts a little pressure on the other recruits. Plus, if Joe continues to develop consistent with his recent rise in the rankings he will be a special player.

Would love to get Joe. Can not wait to hear if he will be committing. Would be a HUGE pick up!

definitely would be exciting to see Joe play for the Maroon and Gold.

Will Joe Coleman be first 2011 recruit for Tubby Smith?

By Marcus Fuller on September 23, 2010 10:40 PM

After making official visits to the University of Minnesota and Santa Clara the last two weeks, Hopkins High School star Joe Coleman still couldn't decide on a school.

Gophers coach Tubby Smith and Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating met with Coleman at Hopkins on Thursday to try to make another pitch for him.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Coleman got together with his family to discuss both programs, but he hadn't made a decision as of late Thursday night.

A member of Howard Pulley's AAU team, Coleman is ranked No. 80 among ESPNU's top 100 seniors. He also is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com. Coleman would be the Gophers' best recruit since they landed top 100 players Royce White from Hopkins and Rodney Williams from Cooper High School in 2009.

Coleman would also be the first member of Smith's 2011 recruiting class. The Gophers, who hope to add three players, hosted Iowa shooting guard Josh Oglesby and New Hampshire point guard Naadir Tharpe on official visits last weekend. Tennessee guard Andre Hollins, a Rivals.com top 150 player, is visiting this week.

The Broncos are trying to steal Coleman away with the help of former Gophers assistant and Hopkins player James Ware, who is now on Keating's staff at Santa Clara.

-- As of Thursday, the Gophers and Iowa were the only two Big Ten men's basketball programs without an oral commitment in the 2011 class. That isn't a very good sign, but it could all be forgotten after getting Coleman.

Three players? Sounds like they expect some attrition. I'm glad they're pursuing three though.

Any other MN players on Santa Clara squad

Has the Ware connection paid off?

Raymond Cowles (sp?) from Hopkins plays for Santa Clara, avg 7 pt/game as a freshman last year according to ESPN.com...there was also a taller forward from Hopkins that played for them 2-3 years back I think?

They're pursuing more than three, but the comment from Marcus may just be a 'math issue' on his part.

Thanks for the Google lesson...actually was impressed...I was not certain though where I could see when Ware arrived at SC and if any MN kids had graduated or transferred out. By posting the question I also left the possibility for some folks to editorialize on how Ware was doing, why he left Hopkins, etc., etc. Of course, now I know not to ask any questions of fact on this board without first doing my Google homework.

Carry on.

Young squad. 4 Jrs, 4 Sophs, & 7 Fresh. Looks like his planned attrition should come from the frosh. Wouldn't want to lose anyone w/ game experience.

Sounds like Joe committed to Tubby's team. But a Tweet doesn't count as official, does it?

I beleive that it's all verbal until a recruit signs a LOI. The NCAA won't allow a school to sign a 2011 class recruit to a LOI until November. A verbal committment isn't what it used to be .

In the "age of litigation" a man's word is not binding and in HS we're talking kids not men. I taught business law for a few semisters but I would think that an attorney could more acurately explain the requisits of contract law.

I think your rant was meant for DPodoll. I just answered your question.
