Marcus: Saturday's game vs. Wisconsin biggest in a decade

"It's a terrific matchup; I think it's fairly even," Big Ten Network analyst Gerry DiNardo said.

I thought the Gophers were big underdogs?

I'd say the 2005 game was just as big. We were 5-1, ranked, and coming off a huge win in Ann Arbor. Wisconsin had the same record, also ranked, and ended up the season 10-3 and ranked 15th. A win there would have meant 2 consecutive trophy wins for us and likely a top 20 ranking.

Obviously, I get the point of the statement, but I think the 2005 game was bigger than the 2003 game simply because we were both ranked. Heck, given that this matchup is much later in the season and we're still technically in the hunt for a Legends title, I'd say it's the biggest matchup for us in quite a while...

Well, both teams ARE ranked this time too - if you are considering the coach's poll and the BCS standings.

^That's what I mean. I think the 05 game was bigger than 03 (so saying a "decade" is wrong), and I think this year's game is bigger than either, to be honest. We can say that given Kill's time (3rd year) that an 8 win season is great progress and exceeds expectations (compared to 03 where 5-3 in conference was a letdown), but reality is we're still playing for a hell of a lot this season. In 03, by the time we played Wisconsin we were more than likely out of the conference race with a loss to Michigan. Right now, a win keeps us in the Legends hunt (well, ok, with help).

When was the last time a game against Wisconsin meant so much to the team?

I think the biggest game in 2003 that he is referring to is Michigan, not Wisconsin.

Beating Wisconsin is very unlikely. MSU game is better match up. Win that game and be 9 -3.
An outstanding season.

I agree although MSU has found their running game. Its fun being a contender in November versus a pretender!

I'm not very confident of a win in either game....yes anything can happen.

Having said that I would consider 8-4 an outstanding season. From 3 to 6 to 8 wins(500 in Big Ten ) is real progress. To me it's all gravy the rest of the way.

I think that's the right attitude to take. For how bad the team has been recently, a .500 big ten season is a big step in the right direction
