Marcus Fuller blog: Hammock says Eskridge is feature RB for Gophers

I was surprised to read that McKnight was that close to the Gopher td record.

Eskridge starting shows you how Brewster struggled to get any quality running backs in here. Everyone blamed the lack of a running game on the O-line but quality running backs were a part of the problem also.

It must be just me, but it sure seems like Bennet gets the tougher yards and everytime the Gophers need some they put in Eskridge who promptly gains nothing or loses yardage. I find it very frustrating. Hard to imagine that none of the TFr RBs we heard Brew talk so much about weren't better options.

I wonder if I get a mulligan on my bet. Dammit it for coming after the season is nearly over.

The last couple of weeks Esckridge has looked the best. He seems to have more speed and is able to get to the corner better. I thought the running game looked better against Penn State than it has. We will see on Saturday if it was just the competition.

What happened to Kirkwood?

Eskridge needed to be red-shirted his first year here, but the injury to Bennett forced him into action way too early. I think he's the best overall running back on the team, but Bennett is a good short yardage option.

What happened to Kirkwood?

Kirkwood is the best of three - good vision and physicality. Eskridge and Bennett run hard and display good effort, but they just do not have the vision. There's too much "tap-dancing" before they hit the hole.

Unfortunately, Kirkwood has been dinged up (hamstring I think). I haven't seen an update on his status in a while. It certainly doesn't seem like he is being rushed back. Are we looking at a medical red-shirt here?

Kirkwood was on the sidelines against Penn State, wearing a jersey but not suited up at all. No idea what his injury is, I just remember seeing him with no pads on.

I don't think so. He has played in three games (MTSU, USC, NIU), but played in the fourth game of the season (NIU). Without looking up the rules, I think it is the first three games of the season that they play (certain % of snaps?).

Rallis was injured against Cal, our third game last year, and got his medical redshirt.

I don't remember seeing Kirkwood out there against NIU, but if he did play it was another huge blunder by the coaches. Redshirting him was a no-brainer after he got tweaked his hammy.

The biggest downfall of our running backs the past few years in my opinion is their lack of ability to take one to the house (or at least break 20+ yarders). Eskridge and Bennett are solid, but both lack the ability to take an 8 yard gain and turn into a 50 yarder.

There are many runs where if they were just able to make one guy miss, they are gone.
