Marcus Fuller blog: Gophers target Welch was told Tubby is not leaving

Also doesn't seem to remember Mr. Welch's first name.

As a beat writer why would he point out a negative of us by asking Julian if not having a practice facility would be a big deal? Does any minnesota press give the gophers positive treatment besides Sid?

I don't think Myron is a jerk, he is a little 'DevoeJo' I think I'm better than I really am. Marcus would be pretty good w/out his a negative twist bs.

Tubby is staying.

Marcus adds a few smart-alecky negatives (coaches telling him what he wants to hear, Ga Tech a better fit, only NWU and Minnesota don't have practice facilities in B10, etc). Guy's a jerk. Hard to say whether Marcus or Myron is a bigger one.

Ga Tech is a coaching graveyard. UNC and Duke dominate ACC and always will.

I agree.

What an a$$hole. Marcus that is.

Both Cremins and Hewitt took GT to a Final Four and lasted ~ 10 years or more. I don't think Tubby is going and I don't think they want him, but GT is a good job, not a graveyard.

FWIW, both Marcus and Myron get off on being as negative as possible and it's beyond annoying. It's one thing for Souhan and Reusse to do it. I don't give a crap what the 'opinions' of Marcus and Myron are. Look to your Twins and Vikings counterparts and see how to your job properly.

It's a graveyard (IMO) because no coach there will ever dominate ACC or even contend. The ACC champ will almost always be UNC or Duke.

You can't simply dismiss the entire conference that way. Maryland and GT have been in the National Title game within the last 10 years (Maryland winning). Clearly in can be done. And Maryland and GT specifically are in large metro areas and very good jobs. Maryland >GT > FSU, Miami, Clemson, UVa, VT, etc.

From the Barn: from years of personal experience/interaction w/ both, you're wrong.

Doogie, please enlighten me as to what makes Myron a top-flight college basketball beat writer or even a mediocre one.

Throwing a georgia tech is a better fit comment into anything involving a recruit is a dick move. Therefore, he is a dick.

I see your point but don't agree. Ga Tech is not a "great" job for coaches. The BOTB don't flock to it when it's open.

Ditto Maryland. Gary Williams is an alum there.

Favorite quote from Welch

"Any gym is good enough for me as long as there's a hoop and a basketball

Doogie, are there any media members in town you DON'T stick up for? Look, I don't know Marcus personally. Maybe he's just a swell fella, but he does look for every opportunity to be negative (like most of the media in this town, unfortunately). I don't think it's unreasonable to call him a jerk, although that's not my personal opinion. I just think as a young sportswriter he's got the idea that negative is the "professional" way to approach writing, because of the rest of the incompetents littering the sports pages of the Twin Cities. And it's indisputable that Myron is a terrible writer. Sure, he's young, and I bet he's cheap, but the dude can't write. Now, Myron doesn't bother me as much as some others. I despise Souhan far more, because columnists are supposed to be better writers than the guys on the beat, but still, I don't know how you could deny that Myron's a pretty bad major market newspaper writer.

Doogie, don't do it. Whatever you say it won't help people on the board understand that these writers are simply doing their job, which is to get people to the news sites and read the papers.

I have to admit when I first read the line about the practice facility the first thing that came to my mind is that Marcus was kind of helping Tubby out here by bringing the issue to the forefront and putting it in print as much as possible; I feel like the more it gets out there the bigger an issue it becomes and quicker the University needs to take action on it. It's not like Welch is deciding between the Gophers and another school who has more to offer than the U.

It was just my first reaction, maybe not the right one, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

There will not be a practice facility at Minnesota during Welch's 2 years of Div I play left. I don't know but wonder if Utah, TCU, Kent St (et al) have practice facilities?

There won't be any action until $20 million is in sight.
