Let me premise all of this with the fact that if I had to guess (which I'm obviously doing), I would guess that Brewster won't be fired until later in the season or immediately after the loss to Iowa.
Having said that, I think all this talk about it "making no sense" and being "impossible" that he'll be fired earlier than that is missing the boat a little bit.
To start with, I think it's going to be very interesting to see what the crowd is like this weekend vs. USC. Will there be a bunch of empty seats? Probably not, because it is USC. But there will be some for sure. Will the booing and "Fire Brewster" and/or "Fire Maturi" chants be sparse or deafening and continuous?
So consider this: If the Gophers get steamrolled somewhere in the neighborhood of, oh, I don't know, 55-0 on Saturday vs. USC, what do you think the remaining home games will be like? If Maturi (or whoever's making the decision at that point) doesn't fire Brewster then, the implication is that they don't think Brewster should be fired. It's not like they can come out and say they're going to fire him but they're just waiting until the season is over.
Maturi and Co. will really be in a box if the embarrassment continues, which is a distinct possibility, maybe even probability.
Things could get really, really ugly at the stadium. I fully understand the concept of the potential "damage" that firing a head coach could do so early in the season, but I do think a lot of you are completely dismissing the damage that could be done if they don't fire Brewster sooner rather than later.
Can you imagine what the rest of the home season would be like at TCF Bank Stadium?
If they get blown out and embarrassed by USC, the doomsday scenarios just go even more completely through the roof. But there would be one way to plug the dam: Fire Brewster right then. Who would boo anymore? What would be the point? Who would be going on TV and radio calling for the coach's head anymore?
Firing Brewster would allow them to close the book on a very bad chapter and begin the process of moving on. Horton could take over as interim coach. It's not like it could get any worse.
Then you thank Adam Weber for his service and start coaching up Gray and give him the opportunity to see if he can be a Big 10 QB. I'd rather start to find out now.
The notion that we're only two (or three after USC) games in and could still make a bowl game, and blah, blah, blah is nothing but a fairy tale. If people can't see that now, nothing will ever allow them to.
I think there should be some indication Saturday, probably early on, of whether this team quits on Brewster or tries to rally around him.
If USC rolls, don't be surprised if Brewster's gone on Sunday morning.
