Let me premise all of this with the fact that if I had to guess (which I'm obviously doing), I would guess that Brewster won't be fired until later in the season or immediately after the loss to Iowa.

Having said that, I think all this talk about it "making no sense" and being "impossible" that he'll be fired earlier than that is missing the boat a little bit.

To start with, I think it's going to be very interesting to see what the crowd is like this weekend vs. USC. Will there be a bunch of empty seats? Probably not, because it is USC. But there will be some for sure. Will the booing and "Fire Brewster" and/or "Fire Maturi" chants be sparse or deafening and continuous?

So consider this: If the Gophers get steamrolled somewhere in the neighborhood of, oh, I don't know, 55-0 on Saturday vs. USC, what do you think the remaining home games will be like? If Maturi (or whoever's making the decision at that point) doesn't fire Brewster then, the implication is that they don't think Brewster should be fired. It's not like they can come out and say they're going to fire him but they're just waiting until the season is over.

Maturi and Co. will really be in a box if the embarrassment continues, which is a distinct possibility, maybe even probability.

Things could get really, really ugly at the stadium. I fully understand the concept of the potential "damage" that firing a head coach could do so early in the season, but I do think a lot of you are completely dismissing the damage that could be done if they don't fire Brewster sooner rather than later.

Can you imagine what the rest of the home season would be like at TCF Bank Stadium?

If they get blown out and embarrassed by USC, the doomsday scenarios just go even more completely through the roof. But there would be one way to plug the dam: Fire Brewster right then. Who would boo anymore? What would be the point? Who would be going on TV and radio calling for the coach's head anymore?

Firing Brewster would allow them to close the book on a very bad chapter and begin the process of moving on. Horton could take over as interim coach. It's not like it could get any worse.

Then you thank Adam Weber for his service and start coaching up Gray and give him the opportunity to see if he can be a Big 10 QB. I'd rather start to find out now.

The notion that we're only two (or three after USC) games in and could still make a bowl game, and blah, blah, blah is nothing but a fairy tale. If people can't see that now, nothing will ever allow them to.

I think there should be some indication Saturday, probably early on, of whether this team quits on Brewster or tries to rally around him.

If USC rolls, don't be surprised if Brewster's gone on Sunday morning.

Its not about you. These athletes have worked hard all offseason and season, they deserve to have their head coach for the entire season.

One problem!! The Pres. is retiring, and we sure don't want Maturi to hire another Coach. I don't think Brunniks wants to create any controversy his last yr. He will let the new guy handle it. If Maturi acts, what will the Pres. do??? Would that pressure him into actually firing Maturi??? Maybe when the Pres. retires, Maturi will just do the same. LOTs of ??????????? other than just Brewster.

reason #1- His buyout is cheap as hell. Should have been fired in his post game presser

Agreed. But I think Maturi could still fire Brewster without being given the authority to hire his replacement.

Yeah, this is the tough part.

You're relying on Moron #2 to do something smart after he fires Moron #1. And the fact that Moron #2 is a short timer and his boss is a short timer doesn't help much.

I think we're in this until the end of the season. Maybe a few weeks earlier if the wheels really come off.

The situation with the President on his way out and Maturi already having bungled one hiring of a head coach is really a mess. One bit of precedent is that at Florida in 2004, Ron Zook was fired after the 7th game of the season but allowed to coach until the bowl game. I don't know what they should do. All I predict is that if USC wins, there won't be many students attending the Northern Illinois game.

Can't get any worse?
Brewster has upgraded the talent base every year. He was handed almost nothing when he came in.
Make sure you post after we upset USC.

Oh, this stuff gets me every time!

IMO, upsetting USC is about the only thing that can keep Brewster's job at this point. And I say that as a long time Brewster supporter.

I'd love to see the Gophers upset USC, but Barkley is going to carve the defense up like a Thanksgiving turkey. I'm afraid to watch the game.

Afraid?
You don't deserve a winner gutless.

Yeah, I've got this thing about televisions in general. Horrified of them.

I'll watch the game, but it's going to be ugly. That was the point of my comment.

Barkley and those WRs are going to light up the Gopher secondary like the 4th of July. But again, it won't be fun to watch.

It's debatable at this point who is Moron #1 and #2. A guy who passes over Bo Pelini and Lane Kiffin? Or a coach who can't even coach.

Could be wrong, but didn't Pelini turn down an interview. Kiffin? Turning down Kiffin, was the only thing that should be praised about the last hiring. One Lou Holtz-like departure was enough for most Gopher fans.

Kiffin, even if he would have been hired by the Gophers would be coming out of the Visitors locker room on Saturday.

He was handed Eric Decker...imagine our team since 2007 with no Eric Decker...YUCK!

If the talent has been upgraded, why hasn't the team's performance likewise been upgraded?

Maturi was quoted by Walters today as saying 'I've fired a coach mid-season once, I don't anticipate doing it again.' That was Monson of course. I think it was a similar situation though. Even though it was only 8 games in, it was painfully obvious he was dead-man walking. In order for The Barn not to turn into either a screaming mob or a morgue, he had to do something. Further it was probably better to give Coach Mo a chance to try and pull the thing back together.

All that said, it really is a mess given Maturi and Bruinick's current job statuses. I think both of them would rather keep Brew around one more year until the new President has a say. But Saturday pretty much took that option away. I don't think they'll do anything for several more weeks, but if we reach 2-7 or that range, they may have to cut bait just to keep TCF from being an angry mob/a morgue.

Yeah, if it all goes really, really bad there's a genuine risk of TCF being a giant, beautiful empty memorial to 40 years of ineptitude.

Until the Iowa game comes around and those lice turn it into a modern-day Gomorrah. FML.

To answer the original title "Making the case for firing Brewster in-season"....

I guess we'd have to add saving the environment to the list of pros (sees how they've already printed up the press release).

He's gotta go soon. All the talk of the upgraded talent is hype or the coaching is shackling guys. Either way a change has to happen.
