because of the multiple threads about perceived weaknesses related to coaching, certain players and positions, one area that I'm very pleased with and one that has had little discussion is the special teams play of this year's Gopher contingent.

Given the uncertainty in kicking PATs or short field goals in recent years, Eric Ellestad is doing a tremendous job. IMO, he's been the the most consistent kicker since Nystrom. (I hope I didn't jinx him!) His kick-offs are effective, too; some touchbacks or near the goal line, and when they're returned the tackling has been solid with very few returned beyond the thirty yard line and usually around the twenty.

On the flip side, who isn't excited with Troy Stoudemire's returns? Hopefully he'll return one all the way in Happy Valley. He's been so, so close this year. It's only a matter of time.

The punting and coverage has been pretty solid as well. I would like to see some returns by Bryant Allen, however. That said, he's sure-handed which is a big, big plus.

Special teams play is a big part of a team's success or failure. All-in-all, the Gophers special teams this year have been a big plus and I hope it continues to be a positive.

Go Gophers!!

Agreed. Kick return coverage looked good yesterday. Some very nice tackling out there.

I think the ST's play is important. It shows what this staff is capable of. They've consistently out performed their opponents in this area. I think we are seeing the future for the rest of the team as well.

Every time Thomas takes a kickoff away from Stoudemire (he's done it at least twice where you can see Troy trying to convince him to move and let him take it) it drives me CRAZY because he returns it for 10 yards and is not even close to busting it. He should be benched.

Totally unacceptable to take the ball out of the hands of one of the top return guys in the country. It was a head scratcher, not so much because of the first time, but the second.

Special teams play has been great this year. Sometimes good special teams play is due to coaching and sometimes it is a sign a team's depth is good. It is probably a little of both this year for the Gophers.
