Not wishing to see a repeat of our last game against the Huskers, I offer a couple of ideas for damage control:
1. Shorten the game. On offense, we should not be snapping the ball with more than 5 seconds on the game clock. Assuming we are at least able to move the ball and pick up some first downs, this will minimize the time Martinez is on the field. In other words, we must dominate time of possession.
2. One or maybe two players must be assigned to bird dog Martinez. They should be getting hits on him or be in a position to do so on every play. Personally, I'd like this job assigned to Tinsley.
3. Assume Martinez will run the ball on every play. I know he's not their only threat but he is their biggest threat and their quick hitter. Remember, we are talking loss mitigation here.
4. No turnovers and no freaking arm tackling.
That's all I have for now. Add your own. No negative Nellies please (that means you, Art)

5. Comfort yourself with the fact that you don't live in Nebraska.

Do you mean less than 5 seconds on the play clock?

You are asking for "no negative nellies" yet you are advocating a strategy that has nothing to do with winning and everything to do with avoiding a blowout by X number of points? That seems pretty negative to me. No loss on the scoreboard is more embarrassing than not playing to win. Obviously I don't believe the Gophers will beat Nebraska on Saturday, but it does nothing for the future of the program to go in to a game with an idea of "damage control". Also, the Gophers have no chance of dominating time of possession against Nebraska. This will be the best defense the Gophers have seen this year.

I disagree completely, when you are outmanned physically in every aspect your main objective is to keep the game close going into the fourth quarter where anything can happen. There are many ways to achieve that, but I think that has to be the objective. The OP was giving his alternative as a way to accomplish that.

Exactly, jov. When I was in high school, our basketball team was a dominant force. There was nothing more frustrating for us or more effective for a badly outmanned opponent than a "stall" game from the opening tip off. A team that we would have beaten, oh, let's say, 84-13 stayed around the whole game and lost 10-4 by passing the ball around in the front court the entire game. dpod.....correct, play clock.
