How much of a concern is this?

Matt Simon - WR coach/Passing Game coordinator - interim OC for Outback (OFF the board)
Brian Callahan - OL coach/Running Game coordinator
Clay Patterson - TE coach - has been OC at previous spots
Kenni Burns - RB coach/assistant head coach

- we know for sure that Penn State needs an OL coach
- after doing a quick Google search, I've only found where Schiano has so far hired a co-DC and looking at another target for the other co-DC spot (https://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/...rsey-recruiter-to-rutgers-coaching-staff.html)

Would think that Kirk at least wants to talk to Callahan, and I bet Schiano would love to have several of these guys.

Also, if Fleck doesn't promote Simon, he could be offered an OC spot at other places, including Rutgers?

Simon did a great job in the Outback bowl, but his resume hardly demands a P5 OC role ... unless maybe someone like Schiano is actually running the offense and he needs an OC to just fill the role / do what he says?

Good point. Someone to analyze and create the game plan, make the short lists of best plays in each situation. Then Schiano pulls the trigger each time.

Given Fleck and Schiano's relationship I would be kind of shocked to see him raid our staff for assistants.

As for guys following KC to Penn State, guess it would come down to where their loyalties are. If they are ensured of a spot in the new Simon/Sanford offense and the pay is comparable would think most would be glad to stay put. This is an offense most coaches would want to be part of with the way things setup for next year.

Most coaches will readily admit they are better coaches when they have talented players to work with and there is a lot of returning talent on the offensive side of the ball. Especially for a guy like Callahan. If he doesn't score a big promotion why would he want to leave with 6 returning starters coming back on the O-Line?

Hopefully Callahan is locked up. He's the most concerning now. If he wants to follow Kirk, that would be his out, I guess.

Patterson maybe he wants to give it another year before looking for a promotion. Not that being TE is some low level job, but usually you look to climb the ladder.

Burns I just have no idea what he brings to the table. Could be huge for Mo's continued development.

PJ said one of his best friends in coaching is Penn State’s Franklin.
And his mentor/idol is the HC at Rutgers.
So, I think your take is a bit wonky.

KC going to Penn State had a lot to do with him being from PA and an East Coast guy. Schiano has a ton of coaching connections. I would think he will be able to build his staff without raiding ours.

Every coach is constantly fighting for their job.

I don't think they can afford to not hire the best guy they find, even if he's on a friend's team.

Why would Schiano have any connection to our coaches? I get he has one with PJ and Panagos, but what does he have with anyone else on staff?

Gleeson looks like mostly a NJ guy, who had a one year stint at Okla State. So it's not much of a surprise for me that he took an opportunity to get back to NJ.

Now I wonder if Okla State would have any interest in Patterson, as at least a passing game coordinator?? He is an Oklahoma guy.

No idea but I’m pretty sure the man who is 40 calls plays at OK State

Great! Looks like this thread was needless!

Expect the Gophers to lose up and coming coaches as they climb the ladder of coaching. I think they have lost coaches every year that PJ Fleck has been the head coach. Can someone please confirm this?

My take on this is that it is a double-edged sword. The reason why PJ Fleck is so desired a a dynamic coach is that he leaves his coaches to do their job. He teaches and guides on coaching and matters that do not show up on stats. These coaches once they leave are replaced by eager and hungry coaches who want to coach under PJ. He is getting quite a reputation of talent developer of both players and coaches.

Assistance coaches are free to innovate within the boundaries of the Gophers philosophy. Look at Coach Rossi and what he has done to the Defense. Look at the Outback Bowl where he didn't second guess SImon on calls he made. He just asked him, "Are you sure?" and trusted his coordinator.
