Any chance that someone from Kill's staff is attending the state wrestling meeting looking for any potential walk-ons?

Only if they were already looking them, and want to see how competitive they are.

If they're a decent football player and a good wrestler at the high school, they've got the potential to be a very good football player at the college level. Plenty of very very good LBs wrestled. The skills translate quite well.

Some of the worst athletes I have seen are wrestlers.

It is fun to watch a wrestler on the basketball court :), however many wrestling skills translate to the football field.

Some skills translate like leverage and hands, but not to the extent that a coach would go to the state tournament and try to find walk-ons. I really hope that the walk-ons Kill takes are good football players that have had success in high school. Also targeting basketball players would be better than wrestlers.

Take it for what it's worth but I heard Mason say that if any wrestler wanted to try out for football, he would gladly welcome him. He was referring to the Gopher wrestling program.

What a crock of crap.

As a lineman, those that have been wrestlers tend to be very athletic and, more importantly, know something about leverage and have good balance, two things that give them an upper hand in blocking or shedding blocks.

I agree with the last post, but I would still look on a basketball court for strong kids who are physical and can move before I looked anywhere else.

Not doubting that but I have seen a lot of wrestlers who are incredibly stiff and unathletic.

Wrestlers are not great at all ball sports but wrestling definitely helps on the football field.

This thread is annoying. Why are people still posting? Pointless grumblings among strung out, square Minnesota sports fans...

There could be kid out there that no one thinks is going to play football at the next level because they focused wrestling so much. Maybe they were still an all-conference or all-state performer in football. When Kill goes on record saying we lack depth and he wants to bring in 8-10 more walk-ons, it might be worth a look. No different than going an watching a kid play basketball in the off-season.

He should check out the sororities in Iowa City. I'm sure he could find some space eaters who could help out on the D-line.

Let's say this discussion were about big men in basketball making good tight ends in football...a la Antonio Gates (no Brewster puns intended.) It's purely individual...successful athletes, regardless of sport, share many of the same characteristics. I want football players. Why reach out for long shot walk-ons who didn't play football? Let's reach out for walk-ons who at least have a football base to grow from.

IMO

Nice link.

I never said anything about not having a football background. Neal played football in HS, but not college.

Just looking on the web, this is a kid I know nothing about. Isaac Eichmann is a 215 lb. jr who is wrestling in the AAA championship match. He is listed as a RB on the Hastings roster. On paper looks like a potential walk-on for depth.

They are looking for kids who were almost good enough to get D1 offers, and who have the potential to improve a lot physically.
