I am optimistic for the start of next year

@UNLV-- horrible team -- 1-4 this year with 4 losses by over 25 pts and 3 by over 31 pts.
New Hampshire-- 4 wins and scoring over 39 pts against lesser opponents-- they lost to Toledo by 36
Western Michigan-- 4-2-- lost to both Mich and Illinois (ILL by 3)
Syracuse 4-2-- best comparison is common opponent USC-- lost by 21

I think we should easily start 2-0 and should be in position to be 3-1 before the conference season.

Interesting our first big 10 game is @ iowa-- I can't recall ever having them as our first game. Our road schedule of @ Iowa, WI, Nebraska and Ill will be difficult to steal a win but our home schedule will not be as tough as this year.

I think a nice turnaround could be in store with 5-6 wins possible

Come on the current season isn't even done yet.

Are we watching the same football team? Baby steps, I'll take 2 wins next year as an improvement.

Holy crap -- how can you watch this team and think they'll beat ANYBODY next year?

Brewster went 1-11 and went to a bowl game the next year -- due mostly to a soft schedule, but he did it. So it's possible. But dear god, you can't pencil in any wins with this team until the final buzzer sounds.

Another way to look at it....

UNLV is better than NMSU
New Hampshire is probably pretty similar to NDSU
Western Michigan is pretty close to Miami of OH.

This thread symbolizes Gopher football for the last 5 years. There's always hope for next year...

By the "last 5 years" I assume you mean the "last 40 years."

Go Gophers!!

Western Michigan?

This will be a big game on the recruiting front for us!

@ UNLV, interesting, that may be worth a trip :)

I'm actually glad Maroon92 started this thread. I always like seeing who's on the schedule for the upcoming years. All four games are winnable, but none are automatic.

No we don't even have hope for next year. Remember Kill will start winning when "his guys" are upper classmen is the mantra now. Same thing people said about Brew myself included.

At first I thought this was Wisconsin's non conference schedule but the realized it couldn't be because most of the teams are too good to be on their schedule.

UNLV isn't even close to NMSU. UNLV lost to an FCS opponent by about 40 at home. (an FCS team that UND beat pretty handily the next week)
New Hampshire isn't even close to NDSU's level.
Western Michigan is definitely better than Miami (OH).
Syracuse isn't much better than Western Michigan.

I see us winning the first 2 games, the 2nd two are a toss up. Depends on the improvement.

lol I am not sure I would say at this point if we will win even 1 game next year. What talent will we be adding to what we bring back that will make us better than we are now? Gophers wont win another game this season and next year might be even worse depending on how many kids leave after this one. Lets also remember the recruiting class we have coming in isnt ranked very highly and how many of the current commits will stay committed after watching the team this year will be a key question.

As far as the question goes why not talk about next year because there isnt much to talk about this season that is anything but bad.

This thread delivers, I like knowing the opponents for next year but the additional predictions brought it over the top.

I live in Las Vegas. The Gophers will eat UNLV up for breakfast and spit them out for lunch.

Pretty much the height of hubris to think you can compare two 2012 teams after 6 games in 2011. The transitive property is tricky enough one week in advance, let alone 45 weeks.

UNLV also beat an ok Hawaii team. I'd bet that Hawaii would be favored against by New Mexico St and UNLV beat Hawaii pretty bad. So, if NMSU is a better team than UNLV it certainly isn't by a ton.

NDSU is the 5th ranked FCS team, New Hampshire is the 6th ranked FCS team. New Hampshire is the top ranked team in the CAA, which is by far the best FCS conference (8 of the 11 schools are ranked in the top 20). So again, they are certainly "close to NDSU's level".

I'm not sure why we scheduled New Hampshire. I can see scheduling local FCS schools, but if we're going to schedule one from across the country, why pick one of the better FCS teams? All that people will see is that you played an FCS team.

UNH has been every bit as good as NDSU over the past several years, and better in some years. I believe they have often been a top 10 FCS team. That said, probably better to play NDSU since at least there will be more traveling fans buying tickets.

That was my point. I can see scheduling the local FCS teams, but if we're going to schedule one from out of the area, why not schedule a real patsy? All people see is that you played an FCS team. If you lose to a top FCS team, few people will care whether they were the #1 FCS team, or the #100 FCS team. And if you win, no one will care that the FCS team you beat was better than a considerable number of FBS teams.

I think that your prediction will probably prove to be correct. But, UNLV plays a great game every couple of years. They have beat good/solid Wisconsin, Utah, BYU and Arizona State teams in the past 7 or 8 years. So while its likely the Gophers will have an easy game, it is not a sure thing.

Dear Lord we lost to NMSU at home. Personally I think it is a bit foolish to look ahead a year on the calender and confidently predict wins against any of our opponents.

Sheesh...I think it's insane to look ahead at the calendar and do anything besides set up travel plans to away games. Predicting wins or losses now for 2012 is beyond stupid.

Not at all, it is what fans do. There's nothing stupid about speculating the future. How far in advance are we permitted to speculate?

You permitted to whenever of course. Why though? I mean, this season sucks and all but anything that gets predicted now is literally pulled out of our collective a**es (even more than we usually do around here). So stupid is the wrong word. Pointless is more what I'm going for I guess. :)

Bluto: Hey! What's all this laying around stuff? Why are you all still laying around here for?
Stork: What the hell are we supposed to do, ya moron? We're all losers. There's nothing to fight for anymore.
D-Day: [to Bluto] Let it go. War's over, man. Brewster dropped the big one.
Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: [to Boon] Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard of something to say]
Bluto: The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[Bluto runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the [deleted] happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Brewster, he's a dead man! Mason, dead! Maturi, dead! Elvis, ....
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: [stands up] Yeah, I agree. Let's go get 'em.
Boon: Let's do it.
Bluto: [shouting] "Let's do it"!
[all of the Deltas stand up and run out with Bluto]

I partially agree and partially disagree with your post. I don't think we should ever schedule a local FCS school, it is not a mutually beneficial situation. For the reasons that have been discussed all the time on here, it isn't wise to let them come onto the Big 10 network, in Mpls, and possibly draw kids there that might walk on at the U.

I do agree with you on going across the country to play the best FCS schools. I think the best FCS schools are about as good as a middle of the road mid-major team. Beating them gets you nothing and they really aren't much worse than the middle of the road MAC or WAC teams (the best in those conferences would wax them).

That said, if we are losing to the South Dakotas or New Hampshire's of the world, we have larger problems than strength of schedule.

projecting that we will finish next season's non-conference games 3-1 sounds just like the talk before this season's non-con sked. and we know how that turned out... hopefully, an additional 12 months under kill's methods and strength and conditioning and technique will make a difference. I think it will - but then I thought they would do better this year. guess we'll just have to wait and see.
