Hopkins product Trent Lockett, as many of you know, is having a great start to his sophomore season after a decent frosh campaign. I think he gave a solid verbal to ASU before Tubby got to Minesota, so I don't think he technically "missed" on him, but I think he would have fit in nicely off the bench or even in the starting rotation.

Just wondering if any of you know if Tubby seriously went after him at all? He's a great player!

IIRC, I think he committed pretty early (i.e., ~October of his junior year).. so Tubby was pretty new and had his sights set on a number of good talents... Gophers didn't offer, but I think it would have been a real possibility had he not committed as early as he did... Iowa State was up there with ASU... then a handful of mid-majors, as well as Marquette and Bo cRyan's Madison extension of UW, were all diving into the party.

Another gift from Royce

Had Royce not committed, I think he would have been offered and come here. Simply couldn't offer him with Royce and Rodney committed and an inside track on Mbakwe.

I just happened to look at ASU box score in their loss to Baylor last night.

Lockett played 29 minutes and was 2/2 FG's for 4 pts. I know he has had much better games earlier in the year though.

Actually I think there were just offers to Royce and Rodney out at the time... and Mbakwe was just starting his frosh studies at Marquette. I believe Lockett committed as junior early (i.e. more than a year before he could sign)

According to Rivals:

Lockett committed to ASU on 10/18/07 (fall of junior year), before Royce or Rodney committed. Trent did not have a MN offer at the time. Gophers were waiting on Royce and Rodney. MN felt it couldn't offer Lockett and run the risk that they would not have an available scholarships for Royce/Rodney.

Royce committed to MN on 4/23/08 (spring of junior year).

Rodney committed to MN on 9/28/08 (fall of senior year).

Trevor then committed on 10/23/08 (while at JUCO).

When did Cobbs commit?

I think about the same time as Rodney, early signing period. Cobbs was a pure point guard, though. Lockett is a shooter, so I am not sure having one prevented us from getting the other.

Point was a huge need at the time.

Man, just imagine if the Gophers had Jordan Taylor too. I'm not sure what the Minnesota staff didn't like about him. Leuer I can completely understand considering how late he bloomed, but Taylor was Mr. Basketball. You gotta lock those guys up!!!!

There are better players in that class than Lockett...including Nate Wolters from St. Cloud Tech. He is at South Dakota State and is the best player in that conference as a sophomore. He is a more complete player and would really help the Gophers. Saw him drop 36 the other night along with 6 rebounds, 5 assist and a few steals. I know its a lower D1 but he could help the Gophers right now

I saw him dominate up here at the Great Alaska Shootout a couple of weeks ago... He is really developing into a force. He was the physically strongest player on the court most of the time, and owned the boards. He also has added nice touch to his perimeter shooting. He will be first team All-Pac 10 this year.

I'm an ASU season ticket holder and saw him put in another double-double yesterday (12pnts-10rbds). He is having a good year so far. Has started at the #3 in all seven games. Leads the team scoring (15.6ppg), rebounds (6.9rpg), shooting (63.1%) and is second in assists w/23. He is showing that he can be agressive going to the hoop and has a deadly mid range pullup jumper. Creates his own shot and distributes well. Only 7 games into his sophomore year, he is, by far, the teams best offensive producer and a reliable joy to watch.

BTW, ASU is a bad team.

"Bad Team"- Realy?

Maybe?

Compared to the top of the B10? Well, they are not that good yet.

"Bad Team"? I have difficulty conceptionalizing a Herb Sendek coached "Bad Team".

They have lost 4 games with the seven (5 frosh, 1 soph, 1jr) new scolly players on the roster:
They lost to St. Johns in the Great Alaska Shootout championship game. Their 3rd game in three days when St. Johns had had a rest day in there.
They lost at Baylor - #8 in this weeks coaches poll.
They lost at New Mexico (received 34th place total votes in this weeks coaches poll) and
They lost to Richmond (recieved 39th place total votes in this weeks coaches poll).

"Bad Team"- Realy?

No, not realy. REALLY.

Before you make more excuses for their roster, number of rest days, etc.. let's look at their wins:

UAB by 3.. Weber St by 1.. and Houston Baptist.

PAC-10, baby.

I agree that Wolters is a good player, but certainly not better than Lockett. When Wolters was facing the mighty Fergus Falls Otters in high school, Lockett's Hopkins Royals were participating in elite basketball showcases in New York and Minneapolis while contending with the best conference in the state.

Same goes for college. Lockett excelled last season against better teams.

Wolters is good though, don't get me wrong...

Taylor committed to Wisconsin before Tubby was hired. He is in the same class as Sampson, Iverson, and Joseph.
