I know the "Golden" part of the name came later, but has the team always been known as the Gophers?

If my memory is correct, back at the beginning we were called the Prairie Dogs, in honor of all of the ugly women that came from Wisconsin and Iowa.

The Minnesota Ho's just didn't seem proper.
