He runs a sub 4.4 according to rivals. His Sr. stats are quite a bit lower than his Jr. year, but that has a lot to do with Russell Shepard (the #1 dual-threat QB) being more of the focal point of the offense.
Get Wingo on campus with Lipscomb and find out which is a better running back. I'm pretty sure if they both become Gophers we'll find a way to use both of them.
Hey guys. First post here.
We found enough touches and yards for Barber and Maroney.
True, but that was in a completely different system. I think we will be too talented at WR and QB to be pounding it on the ground like the Barber-Maroney days.
Guys, lots of talk about Lipscomb, possibly Wingo. Assuming this is because our RB productivity this year was sub-par, and who knows if Bennett will be affective again? A guy I'm looking at with more excitement is Kevin Whaley. He was a 5.7 on rivals last year, and if any of you have watched his videos on there, the guy is insane!! Just look how hard he runs at people. I'm looking forward to him getting a bunch of touches next year as a change of pace back.

That is a good problem to have. I think the goal has to be to emulate an offense like USC or Oklahoma. Oklahoma had a Heisman winning QB, productive WR's led by Julio Iglesias, and they found a way to have a RB rush for 1000 yards and another was in the 800-900 yard range. USC had a QB that will be drafted in the first round, very strong receivers that are all 6'3"-6'5" with good hands and 4.4-4.5 speed, and 4 RB's that could be starting at just about every school in the country and they find a way to keep everyone happy.
From what I have read about Jedd Fisch, he doesn't want to pin himself down to one offensive philosophy. He prefers to run an attacking offense that will capitalize on the skills of his players and isolate it against the weakness of the opponents defense. Hypothetically, we could feature a different player each week dependent upon what the opponent did well and what they struggled with.
So like I said earlier, get talented players on campus in our uniform and we'll find a way to use them.
Uh, isn't this what every offensive scheme tries to do rabidgopher, aka grunkiejr. Be careful you are not cutting and pasting from GI again and passing it off as your own, I wouldn't want you to get in trouble on GI again.
What did grunkie post from GI? I don't subscribe, but everything he just wrote about Fisch I read in the Strib. Unless the Strib is also cutting and pasting from GI, in which case I'm sure they'll be sued.

He must have a pretty good 40 time, especially for a 65-year-old.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

First off neither Wingo or Lipscomb are legit 4.4 guys right now. Wingo is closer to 4.6 and Lipscomb is about a 4.5 guy. I love how as high school recruits are labeled as being 4.4 guys then the NFL combine comes and only like 5 RBs run sub 4.5 times. Anyways, Whaley was the best back in practice the last part of the year and I fully expect him to be the man on opening day. Bennett will likely need 2 yrs to fully recover. I do think that Eskridge will be a solid player and will possibly be the starter in fall camp though
I could be wrong but I assumed the Wingo discussion was because he is the top remaining target on the board for us.
I'm also looking forward to adding Whaley to the fold next season. I heard the coaches were having a hard time keeping the redshirt on him when he got healthy enough to play at the end of the season. He is small but extremely quick and could give linebackers fits in space. To me he seems like he could develop in to a Darren Sproles, Bryan Westbrook, Mewelde Moore or David Palmer type of threat for the Gophers.
I am also interested to see Eskridge and Salamon after being in a college strength & conditioning program for a year. Although he only played in two games, Bennett really showed improvement from the S&C program and he had a better burst than I remember in 2007. Hopefully Eskridge and Salamon make a similar improvement.
No doubt the running back position should be improved next season but it brings with it a lot of questions that must be answered to know how improved. Can Jay Thomas return to 2007 pre-injury form? How will Bennett return from his knee injury? How much improvement will Eskridge & Salamon have with the S&C program? What do we have with Whaley, Lipscomb (and hopefully Wingo)? And probably most importantly, how much will the O-line improve under the tutalege of Tim Davis and with the addition of Carufel & Wills?
