isnt there a good chance he would beat out wingo anyway?

There is a lot of talk about Wingo ending up as a LB. Either way, I'm excited to see what Lipscomb can do for the Gophers next season.

He runs a sub 4.4 according to rivals. His Sr. stats are quite a bit lower than his Jr. year, but that has a lot to do with Russell Shepard (the #1 dual-threat QB) being more of the focal point of the offense.

He has the same QB this year as he did last year. If his stats are down it is because he injured his ankle and missed some games.

Wingo is 6'2" 220 lbs and runs a 4.4 and Lipscomb is 5'10" 200 lbs and runs a 4.38 40. I'm not sure I can tell the differece between a 4.38 and a 4.4. Get Wingo on campus with Lipscomb and find out which is a better running back. I'm pretty sure if they both become Gophers we'll find a way to use both of them.

That would be a very nice problem to have.

Hey guys. First post here.

We found enough touches and yards for Barber and Maroney.

True, but that was in a completely different system. I think we will be too talented at WR and QB to be pounding it on the ground like the Barber-Maroney days.

That is a good problem to have. I think the goal has to be to emulate an offense like USC or Oklahoma. Oklahoma had a Heisman winning QB, productive WR's led by Julio Iglesias, and they found a way to have a RB rush for 1000 yards and another was in the 800-900 yard range. USC had a QB that will be drafted in the first round, very strong receivers that are all 6'3"-6'5" with good hands and 4.4-4.5 speed, and 4 RB's that could be starting at just about every school in the country and they find a way to keep everyone happy.

From what I have read about Jedd Fisch, he doesn't want to pin himself down to one offensive philosophy. He prefers to run an attacking offense that will capitalize on the skills of his players and isolate it against the weakness of the opponents defense. Hypothetically, we could feature a different player each week dependent upon what the opponent did well and what they struggled with.

So like I said earlier, get talented players on campus in our uniform and we'll find a way to use them.

Guys, lots of talk about Lipscomb, possibly Wingo. Assuming this is because our RB productivity this year was sub-par, and who knows if Bennett will be affective again? A guy I'm looking at with more excitement is Kevin Whaley. He was a 5.7 on rivals last year, and if any of you have watched his videos on there, the guy is insane!! Just look how hard he runs at people. I'm looking forward to him getting a bunch of touches next year as a change of pace back.

I could be wrong but I assumed the Wingo discussion was because he is the top remaining target on the board for us.

I'm also looking forward to adding Whaley to the fold next season. I heard the coaches were having a hard time keeping the redshirt on him when he got healthy enough to play at the end of the season. He is small but extremely quick and could give linebackers fits in space. To me he seems like he could develop in to a Darren Sproles, Bryan Westbrook, Mewelde Moore or David Palmer type of threat for the Gophers.

I am also interested to see Eskridge and Salamon after being in a college strength & conditioning program for a year. Although he only played in two games, Bennett really showed improvement from the S&C program and he had a better burst than I remember in 2007. Hopefully Eskridge and Salamon make a similar improvement.

No doubt the running back position should be improved next season but it brings with it a lot of questions that must be answered to know how improved. Can Jay Thomas return to 2007 pre-injury form? How will Bennett return from his knee injury? How much improvement will Eskridge & Salamon have with the S&C program? What do we have with Whaley, Lipscomb (and hopefully Wingo)? And probably most importantly, how much will the O-line improve under the tutalege of Tim Davis and with the addition of Carufel & Wills?

I'm unsure on how Bennett would fare as the go-to runner, especially after injury, but I was very impressed last season by his blocking and pass-catching abilities out of the backfield. Hopefully he is 100% next season.

Uh, isn't this what every offensive scheme tries to do rabidgopher, aka grunkiejr. Be careful you are not cutting and pasting from GI again and passing it off as your own, I wouldn't want you to get in trouble on GI again.

What did grunkie post from GI? I don't subscribe, but everything he just wrote about Fisch I read in the Strib. Unless the Strib is also cutting and pasting from GI, in which case I'm sure they'll be sued.

It wasn't in relation to this, he has just been catching some heat on GI for taking info from there and posting it over here as they stated "to try and make himself look smart".

He must have a pretty good 40 time, especially for a 65-year-old.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Julio mesmerizes the defense with his soothing vocal passages.

I'm not as worried about RB as some for many of the points others have aptly posted.

Bennett may never be a mail-carrier, but he does so many things well and is going to contribute if healthy.

Whaley has promise and I agree that Eskridge and Saloman will both be improved with a spring practice and full year of intense conditioning behind them.

As for Lipscomb, he looks pretty fleet in his highlight videos (but who doesn't?). He has a nice size/speed combination. We definitely need a "burst" guy, so the other RBs seem to be "read" players. Of course, I haven't seen Whaley.

I guess that was supposed to be "Jauquin" Iglesias. :D

It's one of those names of Spanish decent that means nothing to me. It just has "Iglesias" on the back of the jersey. :)

First off neither Wingo or Lipscomb are legit 4.4 guys right now. Wingo is closer to 4.6 and Lipscomb is about a 4.5 guy. I love how as high school recruits are labeled as being 4.4 guys then the NFL combine comes and only like 5 RBs run sub 4.5 times. Anyways, Whaley was the best back in practice the last part of the year and I fully expect him to be the man on opening day. Bennett will likely need 2 yrs to fully recover. I do think that Eskridge will be a solid player and will possibly be the starter in fall camp though

That is interesting insight oleboy. Just wondering what do you think Lipscomb's role is going to be next year?

I think Lipscomb will get some carries and I think he'll be a great player but you don't win with true frosh usually and I don't think he'll be better than Whaley his first year in the program. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see him become the #2 back but I think he'll even possibly redshirt

I am not excited to see Salamon touch the ball again on offense. I'm sorry but I have never seen such inept running in my life. On every down he touched the ball, he literally ran straight forward and fell over like a windup toy. He has a great football build and apparently a fantastic attitude and work ethic though. Maybe they could use him on defense.

Actually, I think some of these guys' times are legit in high school. Obviously some are inflated, but college players often slow down as they bulk up.

Regarding Eskridge, I think he will be a very good back if he can get a good offensive line in front of him. I was very impressed with him in the Illinois game. And I'm anxious to see what Whaley can do since a lot of people seem high on him.

im worried about lipscomb. i think he is going to be a good back for us but i heard that he might not make it academically due to hurricane katrina and him having to move to texas. hope im wrong. could someone correct me on this?
