Link to Tony Dungy interview with Dan Patrick

I played it backwards, and he clearly says "I am secretly interviewing for the job, and Paul is dead".

I think we all understand that Dungy is not going to coach here, but I think it's obvious he wants to help his alma mater.

So do you think we could hire him to be a consultant during the hiring process? Or maybe hire him to make the hire? (I know that kind of sounds funny)

You will get a guy with Dungy's philosophy, but if you want him as a coach clearly you are ok with that.

I'm at work can't play audio, what did he say?

He said, "Whoever wrote the piece in the Pioneer Press needs to focus on Marc Trestman."

"He is loving his time with football night in America and spending time in Tampa with his family."

From what I can gather from the press in recent years and his relationship with Maturi, I have thought that Dungy would be a key if not the key component in hiring the next coach.

But would Tony be any better at choosing a coach than Bud Grant was at recommending his own successor (Les Steckel)?

Wasn't Dungy a key component in hiring our current coach?

Well judging by Maturi's track record, he may be the best option we have.

Basically, he deflected the question off towards Trestman.

I really think, reading between the lines, that Tony would like Marc to coach at the U.
If he were on the search committee, I believe that Trestman would be the first guy
they contact, and he probably thinks it was a mistake to not hire him in 2006
(my speculation only).

Dungy and Trestman were teammates under Cal Stoll. He knows the guy and how he coaches.
They've coached against each other numerous times, often with Dungy's defenses
going up against Trestman's offenses. I think he knows how formidable Tretsman
would be.

Plus, Trestman understands the unique circumstances to coaching at the U and in
Minnesota.

I really think that is where this whole thing is going, IMHO.

I think that, in terms of being a consultant, Tony's true value to the process would be to convince guys who might not be interested in Minnesota think twice about passing us by.

He wouldn't be trying to find the diamond in the rough, like Maturi thought he could do. He actually could snatch some gem that has been out in the open for everyone to see. A lot of young, successful, accomplished coaches look up to guys like Dungy. And his advice won't fall on deaf ears.

Just to let you know, he was still with the Colts, they offered him the job and he said "I am a pro coach"

As much as I like Dungy

I don't know if he would be a good college coach for a couple reasons. I don't think he wants to recruit. And I don't think he has the college-coach arrogance. I don't know much about Trestman, but it would be nice to get a coach who was a U guy. I always felt with Brewster, even if he was good, didn't come across as a guy who would stay. I think we need a guy with Gophers roots and a proven winner to come in here.

It will please the boosters and encourage the fan base.

Dungy has intimated multiple times that he is not interested in the head coaching job here...do you think he would ever consider the AD job? I've never been sold on his commitment to recruiting if he were a coach, but I think his knowledge of people and general love for the U would make him a great candidate for AD. I dunno...just throwing stuff out at this point.

Dungy is by reputation a man of his word and he has clearly promised his family he'll be there for them in Tampa. He'll be in Tampa, so forget about him in any capacity other than a consultant - booster.

Well judging by Maturi's track record, he may be the best option we have.

Maturi hired Miami of Ohio's hockey coach who has led them to back to back ncaa finals
Maturi wanted to hire Bo Ryan when he was at Denver but was vetoed from up above
Maturi hired Tubby Smith
All of his non revenue hires at Minnesota have been great

He's only screwed up football
