I'm on the Drake Lindsay bandwagon. But the kid has played exactly three P4 games and we've anointed him the savior. I don't want to jinx him. He is going to have some rough games (Cal was a little bit rough). He has receivers who drop more than they should. He hasn't, so far, had a strong running game to set up the pass. He's fighting some headwinds ... and will run into a hurricane tomorrow. But how good has Drake been to this point, IN HIS FIRST THREE POWER 4 GAMES? Below is a comparison to Athan's opening three games in 2023 (after he played several in 2022) and Brosmer's opening three games in 2024 (after 4 years at New Hampshire):

Athan, playing against Nebraska, Eastern Michigan and UNC was 45 for 88 (51.14%) for 446 yards (9.91/comp.) with 1 TD and 3 INTs. Ouch.

Brosmer, facing an easier opening against UNC, Rhode Island and Nevada, was 53 for 77 (68.83%) with 627 yards (11.83/comp.) 3 TDs and 1 INT. Brosmer had two senior WRs, Jackson and Spencer, to lean on.

Drake, playing against Buffalo, Cal and Rutgers (on par with Athan's 2023 opening schedule) was 69 for 108 (63.89%) for 819 yards (11.87/comp.) with 6 TDs and 2 INTs. One INT was not only a fluke (off Geers foot) but probably should have been reversed for the covering LB's dropping Geers beyond the 5 yard mark.

Drake is starting out better than Brosmer, a fifth year senior, did. Drake is light years ahead of Athan's opening three games in 2023 (and Athan started a few games in 2022). PJ is giving Drake more freedom to throw. And Drake has piled up yardage and TDs faster that either of his two predecessors.

I'd love to see Drake continue his upward ascent against Ohio State. But he will be facing the best defense in the nation. He will be armed with a mediocre running attack (so far), receivers who have dropped a number of catchable throws, and a coach who for some reason (including lack of turnovers by the defense, and no field-flipping punts) finds himself on the wrong side of the field position battle for much of the game. The Gopher offense will need several short fields to keep up with Ohio State, but short fields have been very elusive for the Gopher offense this year.

One last stat geek observation: how did Athan and Brosmer fare against their highest rated opponent in the studied years? Athan, facing No. 1 Michigan, was 5 for 15 for 52 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs. Max, facing No. 5 Penn State, was 15 for 23 for 173 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Drake, facing No. 1 Ohio State in only his 4th P4 game, will have to far outplay Athan and Max if the Gophs are to be competitive. Go Gophers!!

He’s been better using those games, without a doubt.

Wonder how Athan stacks up using his first theee starts overall?

Brosmer definitely got a lot better during the season while AK seemed to get worse as time went on.

I’d take Drake over either of them.

I'd like to see Fleck allow Harbaugh to let Drake do his thing and sling it tomorrow. Don't try to protect him from the chaos that is the Horseshoe, give him a chance to show he's one of the next big things in the league and give him a chance to make some mistakes to grow from. I don't think anyone is realistically expecting a win so being conservative benefits no one unless the only goal is to come away uninjured. If we unleash the offense, that's the way we realistically have a chance of competing. Don't play to lose respectably, play to win.

I don't disagree.

I do think these plans sometimes sorta just seem less good after the 3rd INT ;)

Granted ... I don't have a problem with it.

I didn't consider the int angle because I don't think it'll be a problem, but if we start wandering into that territory I'm not opposed to preventing future PTSD for Drake against them and shutting down the offense

Yeah....I have zero doubt the coaches are going into the game with a gameplan they hope gives them a chance to pull the upset. But if/when things go sideways self preservation kicks in. Some fans see that as giving up and trying to make the loss look better on paper but a lot of it comes down to trying not to get your players killed.

Against a great D you could keep taking deep shots over and over again, but if they are not working all you are really doing is running the risk of getting your QB lit up while he holds the ball waiting for the play to develop.

I always go back to the Kirk C quote:

"Players make plays. I don't call a play unless I think they can make it." (might not be the exact quote but it was close)

Coach's see these guys in practice, no matter how much they might want to blow it up and play like they're going to score 70 and go hog wild ... if they don't see a guy making a play in practice vs our own team ... they're probably right to not call that play vs tOSU ;)

Granted with Drake ... they might want to.

I have always felt some fans look at offense like a video game where you can just throw caution to the wind and chuck it. So in their head it is the coaches holding players back and not being aggressive enough.

Now they aren't always wrong.....but like you said....coaches see these players in practice everyday so they have a much better idea of what they can and can't do and what will or won't work in the games.

I think I heard somwhere that the Gophs have more plays of 20+ yards than OSU so far.

My worry would be Drake getting killed by their D line. Maybe lots of quick passes…

Drake was in the offense a full year before starting, which has to help in comparison to Max, who had more of a crash course.
A.K is that guy who has a lot of hot starts and then cools as the game goes on, it happens to him a lot, it seems.

Don't know what it was like for him last year but this year so far Rutgers has been a horrible second half team and a lot of that falls on Athan. In their first game they built a big lead and then hung on against Ohio. Iowa and Minnesota both dominated the second half against them.

But to your other point, comparing Drake to Athan is a much better comparison because Max got thrown to the wolves making the jump from FCS to Power 4 whereas Drake and Athan both had some time to acclimate before needing to start.
