I've never seen him before. Is he some kind of joke? He looks like is 14 and he plays about as well as I would out there. That was high comedy and made the blowout even more interesting to watch right up until the end. He would be funny enough to watch if he wasn't the coaches kid. That's just the icing on the cake.

Iowa basketball = Sad state of affairs.

He honestly looked like a ball-boy wearing a jersey

I noticed at the very end of the game, few seconds left he was putting on the one man full court press and then kinda pushed our guy at the final second... odd.

I've always thought having your kid play for your team as weird. It's one thing playing pee wee baseball when your 10 and having your dad coach, it's a whole other deal for a D-1 college. Especially in this situation where Lickliter does not look like he belongs on the court. Is he a scholarship player?

the kid isn't good enough to play d 2 but since he is the coaches son he gets PT on a big ten team, That is sad *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#.

Little Lick...

Obviously Iowa needs bodies ergo Little Lick gets to play for dad.
Just one more reason Iowa SUCKS.

Never seen a kid so out of place on the basketball court. I can understand playing a kid like that if he's a walk-on/team manager and it's a lop-sided game, but he wouldn't even play at Winona State.

He is the poster boy for all that is wrong with the Ia BB program.

My buddies and I were joking that the Big 10 must be an intimidating place for Lil' Lick to play, if for no other reason than looking up into the student section during most conference road games and realizing there are probably 10+ dudes watching you that could take you in a game of one-on-one.

He did score his career high against us, though. He drilled three 3-pointers in Iowa City against us. Not that it takes much to make 3-pt shots against us.

He's not on scholarship, and there is no chance he would go on scholarship. I think the only reason he is playing is because Tucker got the boot (look at how Lickliter didn't play for the first dozen or so games of the year).

He Was Actually a Pretty Good HS Player

3 year starting point guard and senior year captained Iowa City HS to 24-1 and 4A state title. B4 moving to IA; played at Franklin Central-excellent Indy program soph/junior years. 24-3 as junior. So the guy can play a little. Not saying a D1 player, but could be a good MIAC player.

Before we rip on this kid too much, let's ask how he was able to hit 3 of 4 treys against us on Jan 2 and scored nine pts in 21 minutes. In fact, he was probably Iowa's most productive player that day.

Lickliter is lights out from three though, you gotta give him that.
He seems to have skill, it is unfortunate for him he is so small.

G4L and Les...You guys are correct. Just another simple example of jealousy pre-empts things to complain about.

If he wants to get into coaching like his dad, playing ball in the BT at Iowa is probably a better path to take than playing in the MIAC.

His lack of size would be a problem at any level. He would struggle anytime the opposition elected to guard him closely. We didn't do that in January as well as we did yesterday.

The reason John Lickliter plays is because Tucker was released from his scholarship and Jeff Peterson transferred to Arkansas at the end of last season. Jake Kelly would have run the point over him too but he transferred to Indiana State.

You mean the game where we led by about 30 at halftime and completely dominated? They made a whole buch of garbage threes in that game. I don't really care. That game was a bigger blowout than last night for most of it.

I care far more about letting an awful Michigan team drain threes and look like world-beaters against us twice.

WAG,

I just didn't think it was very fair to trash the little guy after he clearly played as well as he's capable of playing. The difference between the two blow-outs was that we finished last night and we didn't in January.

What's the difference between iowa carrying him and when the gophers gave a roster spot to ryan saunders?? Other than iowa has run out of players and has to use him

RE: Ryan Saunders

He was terrible and only there because Flip is a big donor. Lickliter is a far superior player.

Les...Yes he was there, but did not play squat. It's not always who ya know, it's who ya blow.

I am trashing the state of the Iowa program more than the kid. But come on...the kid literally looked like he was 14. And last night he was running everywhere like a spaz. And he's the coach's kid. That's pretty obvious fodder for fans, especially when it comes to a chief rival.

I have nothing against him. If he turns out to be a good player, more power to him. He'll still probably get crap from opposing fans simply for being the coach's kid.

About Ryan Saunders: 1) He wasn't the coach's kid, 2) he almost never played, 3) when he did play, I never saw him try a ridiculous reverse layup like he was in his driveway, follow it up by spastically punching at the ball while it was held by a guy twice as big as him, throw up a 30 footer, and put intense full-court pressure on the dribbler under his own hoop with 11 seconds left and the game over, and 4) I wouldn't be surprised if opposing fans made fun of him on their own message boards as well.

While some of those things could be termed as scrappy, last night in the situation the game was in, he looked foolish and stood out in an obvious way. It entertained me.

I have a hard time ripping on the little fella.

He's built like an oompa loompa but he still gives Iowa decent minutes.

I enjoy making fun of Iowa as much as the next guy and no problem calling Lick an oompa loompa, the munchkinland mayor or minnie me. But he's only playing because Iowa has lost so many players and directly because Tucker is gone. He is a sophomore walkon and is on the team to learn to be a coach. He was on the team all of last year and never saw a minute. It was never in the plans to have him play it just has worked out that way and I think it's been a really tough deal for young and old Lickliter.

That said, I enjoy any Iowa program being in a state of affairs where an unqualified walkon has to give important minutes. The student section reaction was pretty funny when he came in. It was almost like, "Holy crap. What is that?" LOL.

col nathan jessup - ha! too funny. here is an idea for the barnyard. if little lick (assuming his dad doesn't get fired) is on the floor the next time iowa plays us in the barn you guys/gals need to start singing the "oompa loompa" song from charlie and the chocolate factory. that would be absolutely hilarious.

fuch iowa! :)

I bet there are a lot of guys who would love to be on a team (even Iowa) "to learn to be a coach". A lot of guys who are way better players.

Saul was a better player and Ryan never played. I guess it is all about whose kid you are even when your name is Lickliter.
