posters start jumping off bridges. I'm not a Brewster backer or a Mason backer but I think this team is not as bad as people think they are. People are saying that Armagedon is upon us. There are a number of reasons why I think this team will still be very competitive.

1. Offense - The main reason is the offense. This offense is too experienced, deep and talented not to be good this year. The whole offense is full of upperclassmen. We have a talented recieving corp and a senior quarterback. Plus, Bennett looks to be better than ever, and the oline looks pretty decent this year. The USC game may prove me wrong but I think this offense will score some points and will keep our defense off the field.

2. Coaches - I'm not sold on Brewster but I think he does have a good group of assistant coaches. They will get things at least somewhat straightened out.

3. Roston and Theret - These guys will at least help the defense get some stops. It will be just enough to win some games.

I just don't think we are as bad as people are making us out to be. It's still too early to be jumping off bridges. I think this team will win at least 5 or 6 games and when we do people will be saying just like they did with Mase give the coach one more year. I would not mind seeing someone else take over as head coach but we are not as bad as posters think we are.

I actually wish some of the posters would jump off bridges.

Good post, even though you will probably get ripped apart for it (knowing this forum). I think the main reason we didn't beat, or even blow out, USD is because of bad positioning and missed assignments on defense. That happens with young defenses and can be fixed. I think our defense will get better throughout the year. It remains to be seen if that will transfer into W's though. Next year we could be great on defense but I'm not so sure if Brewster or Cosgrove will be around for it.

IMO Brewster's gone barring a remarkable run starting Saturday.
Yes our O will score some, but it's not a top half Big Ten O.
Yes our assistants have had success elsewhere, but especially on D, the curve is steep. Maybe they earn their keep in spades and get the team to overachieve against the upcoming ranked teams.
Yes they will help alot, the #1 reason our D was off was the safeties taking bad reads and angles, #2 was LB same as above, #3 was DE's getting hooked or biting on PA and getting sucked inside.

The only way I forsee Brewster surviving is to recapture the axe and pig, along with a solid run against middle of the pack big ten teams. 6 wins with 2-3 over ranked opponents down the stretch will erase the SD loss, however, it just doesn't seem possible. 5 wins this year say over NW, IL, NIU, PU along with MTSU is not enough to salvage anything including recruiting and fan support.

Right now I think our offense is actually in the top half of the Big Ten. Only two games in though, but still a significant improvement.

Bad managers can ruin the best efforts made by their employees. There are definitely some good coaches on this squad, but Mason, Wacker and Gutie had some good assistants too some of whom have gone on to be head coaches (e.g. Kevin Sumlin, Joker Phillips, Mark Snyder, Jim Zorn).

I think everyone has to face the facts, Brewster won't be here next year. No way, no how. They will need an heraculean effort just to win 2 more games this season, which leaves them at 3-9. That's not the progress Brewster has been promising. If they retain him, the season ticket renewal rate will probably drop into the 70s. That is not good when you're trying to support 25 sports while paying back the bond on the stadium. The situation calls for drastic action, not let's wait and see. It's worth an extra couple million a year in coach with a reasonably good reputation. I think enough people are just upset enough to open their wallets and the U is in such a position that they see the cost is worth the benefit.

+1

Plus, we didn't lose the South Dakota because they were more talented than we are. Theret and Royston will help lead the defense, but there is something much larger wrong with this team.

I think people are overestimating our offense right now. It may turn out to be OK, but we still haven't played a physical team of our equal yet this year. Yes, we were able to run the ball against MTSU and USD, but to me this doesn't prove much of anything. We will find out a lot more this week.

As far as offenses in the BT go, I would easily take Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana over ours right now. Northwestern looks fairly strong, but Persa is kind of a one-man show at this point so it is a toss-up. Michigan State has looked good on the run, but for some reason Cousins is struggling so far this year. They have the ablility to easily be a top 5 offense. Purdue should have had a really good offense, but with Bolden and now Smith out they have been decimated.

USC is definitely going to slow our run game down. I would be surprised if we get more than 21 points in the game - which is why I would actually bet the under (53) on this game.

Royston's not playing. So it's a one man show with a moderately talented Theret. Whoop.
