It will be one of these two gentlemen. Maturi has already said that Dungy will help him in the selection process. This means that Dungy will almost insist on Leslie Frazier, the two are very close and Dungy has suggested the only reason Frazier isn't a head coach is because he is black.
He (Dungy) is probably correct on this point. If Frazier were white he would have had a dozen job offers by now. Sad, but absolutely true. Frazier is respected and could most likely bring in a very good coaching staff.
Marc Trestman is the only non-black candidate that would be, IMHO, acceptable. Not just because of his head coach experience and ties to Minnesota. The main reason is that the CFL season is over with the Gray Cup on November 26. He is the only employed coach that could be here a full month ahead of Frazier.
In my opinion, the key to success will be the ability to bring in a good teaching coaches. The Gophers have had some very good athletes in the last few years. The problem is that they have not been taught a damned thing about how to play their positions. The defensive line and backfield is a very good example. They have the athletic ability they just have not been coached to know the proper techniques to be successful. Look back at the offensive lines for Mason. They were always undersized but they were always superbly well coached unlike the current cast of behemoths that don't have an idea of what or where.
The exception to this is the receivers where Steve Watson has made significant changes in six months. Look at the similarities and differences between Gray and Hageman --- great natural talent and coaching.
Personally I'd like to see Mike Leach, if nothing else, for the opportunity to see the largest personality in the Twin Cities to be related to the Gophers. He would absolutely, positively fill up the stadium.
Leslie Frazier...Welcome to the Golden Gophers!
