Rumor is Les Miles will be the next head coach at Michigan. A few interesting things leading up to this hire. Miles was questioned after his bowl victory and would not answer if he was staying at LSU. Also interesting when Miles was thought to be the coach before Rich Rod became the coach he actually was never offered the job. Miles also has something in his contract that if he leaves to Michigan his buy out is less then other schools.

Correct or not, I heard on some broadcast an LSU player said Miles promised the team he would be back.
It will be interesting to see if he tries to recruit Ohio harder like Mich did when he went there, or if they stay a "national" recruiting team. OSU had to work hard to beat scUM 20 years ago recruiting in Ohio, now OSU owns the state as much as the Longhorns own Texas.

I thought I read the opposite, that Miles' buyout was higher to go to Michigan. Possible I read that about Hoke, but I was pretty sure it was Miles. That LSU put that in his last extension. I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong...

I read yesterday that if he takes the Michigan job his buyout may be waived or at least lowered. LSU would look great if they did a gesture like that. I think his #1 priority is to recruit Ohio and get winning again and the National recruits will come.

We went through a lot of false threads when the Gopher job was open. It sucked to sift through all the threads with misleading thread titles. Just a suggestion: Don't title your thread "Les Miles new Mich coach" unless you are bringing a link to an official announcement. That suggestion gets an exclamation point when your first sentence starts out "Rumor is..."

All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Miles go to Michigan with all the rumors and comments coming out of LSU.

Miles is kind of interesting.

He has done good things at LSU in a tough SEC, but personally I would rather have a guy like Petersen or Harbaugh over him.

Don't forget, that year he won the national championship he had two losses. And the only reason he got in was because he went on a HUGE campaign telling anyone who would listen that they were "The only undefeated team IN REGULATION in football."

Other than that year he has been middle of the road.

Yeah, those 3 other years where he had 11 wins and 6 or 7 wins in America's toughest conference were pretty mediocre. People have 4 11+ win seasons in 6 years all the time.

Between all of the bonehead moves, unnecessary gambles, poor (putting it kindly) clock management skills, seemingly not even being aware that his late-game moves are mistakes, lying, throwing players under the bus, and grass eating, I would wholeheartedly welcome him to Ann Arbor and the Big Ten Legends Division.

And despite all of that, he still has won 78.4% of his games at LSU, has a national title, a conference title, and 3 top-5 poll finishes.

Imagine how good he'd be if he could actually coach.

I feel like this is an absurd assessment. Miles has won 11 games four times. He has won with his own players. He has stud recruiting classes every year. Top 10 AGAIN this year.

If that is middle of the road, then God himself is coaching the team at the top.

LSU has a winning percentage all-time of 64%, so it's not like he was going to come in there and go 3-9 every year. And in taking over from Saban at the height of the program he was set up for success from the get-go. There's no question the man can coach line play, and that is the reason LSU has been successful under him, but as a head man of a program he continues to make stupid decisions that no other coach has ever made in football history. His intelligence level compared to his peers is low, and he refuses to admit obvious mistakes, or worse, lies about them. If I were Michigan, I would look a little deeper than the overall record when making this hire.

Wow! Thank God Maturi didn't hire him! He sounds terrible!

Sometimes gambles pay off. Sometimes kids play hard for a coach who believes in them and proves it by rolling the dice. Les Miles, based on his recruiting, his record as a coach, his ability to win championships, and his preparation of kids for the NFL is one of the best coaches in the country. He would be a huge get for Michigan.

Brady Hoke might be a good coach, but right now he doesn't even deserve to stroke Miles' post. If Michigan gets a shot at Les Miles, they would be insane not to hire him.

Ha. Awesome.

I am fully in favor of injecting this euphemism into random discussions on the board as much as humanly possible. Kudos.

Completely agree. Think of the positives here.

1. National Championship in the past 5 years - CHECK. New recruits know he was won a championship...

2. Won at the highest level (Big School in BCS Conference) Check. More importantly, a very impressive record in the SEC, which is heads and tails above any other conference right now.

3. Runs a clean program - Check. No allegations of inpropriety that I'm aware of.

4. Sends studs to the NFl - Check. Too many to name...

We could go on. Les Miles may not be the bst game manager to ever coach football, but he's still a big big name, and a Michigan guy. That is why he'll be coaching Michigan next year. Success is never guaranteed. So we'll just have to see how he does. It won't be the same as taking over for Saban who left a loaded team.

Ever think i am close to someone in the Michigan program and might have information not released yet? I guess we will wait and see :)

True, LSU has a lot of built in advantages, but it is not a guarantee that they will win. Prior to Saban, they had a long run of relative mediocrity. Miles arrived into a great situation left behind by Saban, but he deserves some credit for keeping them at or near the top.

He also did an admirable job at Ok State prior to LSU. He brought Ok State to respectability after some pretty poor years, and that was before T. Boone Pickens sunk his millions into the football program.

To accomplish all of this he must be doing something right despite his sometimes questionable coaching decisons. His name combined with whatever coaching acumen he has could get Michigan back to the top fairly quickly.

If you know something, just say so. I can't believe how many people cite "anonymous sources" all over the internet in the hopes of having their ego stroked if their "source" turns out to be right.

Les Miles has a record of success as a head coach, and thus is a worthy candidate as a potential hire - I just think he's a clueless, lying, grass eating-idiot who I would welcome to the Big Ten if, for nothing else, the pure entertainment value.

Hehe. I think he's a great choice for Michigan from afar. If he turns into a complete and utter failure there...I wouldn't be heartbroken. I'd be just as amused as I was that DickRod was a failure. Time for that school to learn some humility...

I don't get these comments. Why should Michigan learn humility? With the exeption of Stanford, Nobody combines athletic and academic accomplishments like Mich does.

I was just told by an unnamed source that it will snow somewhere in Minnesota in the next two weeks. Remember, you heard it here first.

Sportscenter just reported he's returning. Nice! Now Michigan can get a lesser coach and suck for the next few years. Let's get that jug!

Looks like Miles is staying at LSU: http://www.lsusports.net/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=5200&ATCLID=205075195

BATON ROUGE - LSU head football coach Les Miles notified LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva on Tuesday morning that he will remain at LSU.

"I am pleased to announce that Les Miles will remain the head coach at LSU," said Alleva. "Les has led this program to many great successes on the field and his players represent LSU well off the field. We look forward to many great years of LSU football under his leadership."

Miles will have a press conference upon his return from Dallas where he is speaking at the convention of the American Football Coaches Association.

Michigan is bungling this one hardcore. This could be a turning point for their program.

No, actually, no one thought you knew anything more than the rest of us.

Credibility - destroyed!

dpodoll...The same could be said for 74.7% of the commentors on GopherHole. The other 25.3% are not QUITE as bad.

That was more a comment on the fan base, not the school. I have nothing wrong with the school personally...
