Leach on Max

According to Gopher Illustrated he is not even a candidate so I don't know why we continue to talk about him.

It cited a couple of reasons why there is little interest from Minnesota:

1.) How he left Texas Tech

2.) His type of Spread offense in the sometimes cold Big 10

3.) High maintenance

4.) Afraid he will leave at the first chance for a bigger job (I.E Georgie if it were to come available within the next year or more.)

For those who talk about the spread not working in the big ten I direct you to Illinois, Purdue for years, Northwestern, Michigan, and Ohio St. Granted they're not the air raid and run the ball more often out of it, but at least Weber wouldn't have the School records anymore!

There is a big difference between the spread and Mike Leach's style of offense. The spread includes actually using a running back, often making the QB make the decision on an option.

Watch an old Texas Tech game and a game of one of those Big 10 teams you say runs the spread and tell me its not different.

Also, Illinois and Michigan are bad.

The spread pass works in the Big Ten

(see Drew Brees)

If the intent of switching coaches is to fill seats, put the program on the national map, and gain instant credibility on the football field....hire leach yesterday.

You are correct, the spread can work in the Big 10. The "Air Raid" offense is the spread on roids and I think Maturi is scared to be the first team in the Big 10 to try and win with it.

I don't disagree with you, I'm just telling you what I read.

However, doesn't Kevin Sumlin run a form of the "Air Raid" down in Houston? If so, that would probably be a mark against him during the search (at least if Gopher Illustrated is right)

Isn't gopherillustrated the same place that already told me Dungy was the coach? They have absolutely no idea.

I believe the spread can work but Maturi said in an interview that in the Big Ten you need a power rushing attack, so I doubt he wants a coach who will run the spread. Plus the factors involving his release from Texas Tech make it a risky move. But I think it would be a good move for Minnesota, it would get alot of national attention for the Gophers plus he is a proven coach, 10 bowls in 10 years.

Texas Tech runs the ball at times. They run it less than Nwestern, but about that much. (They had nearly 2000 yards rushing in 2008).

Any offense can work anywhere. Purdue won games airing it out with Brees and Orton (Tiller years), NWestern has done a nice job with Fitz...any offense can work anywhere if it is run correctly.

Now, i'm not saying that I think we will go after Leach, but don't dismiss it simply because of GI. GI also had rumor this year that Dungy had already agreed to the job and would take over when the season is over.

The need for a power rushing offense, I think, is only recommended because the Big ten is a ball control offense conference. Our defense is so awful a power rushing game is to keep the other D off the field

the fact that so many on this board want Leach, the same board that many picked this year the squad would win 7-8 games, as coach is reason number 1 why he shouildn't even be considered.

Gopher Illustrated is part of rivals.com, an affiliate of Yahoo.com, whose job it is to follow Gopher athletics. I think they know what they are talking about.

Its just like when people say KFAN has no idea what they are talking about, I don't understand that.

I know you want to believe that Leach is coming here, but in all actuality he is not. If he does I will be more than surprise and I think he can succeed here.

Brady Hoke is who I think will eventually come here.

WRONG.

Their job is to sell subscriptions to their product. PERIOD. That's why GopherHole got thrown out of rivals long ago. So take everything they say with a grain of salt. They like looking they are on the inside but what the hell do they know. I can tell you Maturi shouldn't be discounting anyone at this point and I really doubt he's informing internet bobo's of his plans. So I put no faith in what Matt or Ryan's opion from GI...

I don't for a second believe Leach is coming here.
I also don't think for a second think that GI has anyone who actually has information that would imply Leach is already out.
I also know for fact that there are few (if any) people at KFAN that know things about college sports. They have their guys that know the game, but they don't understand the differences between college and pros.

WRONG.

Box?... I... Guess?

I think everyone agrees that hiring Leach would be a long shot so is it that surprising that he may be considered second group of prospective coaches.

I imagine Maturi has spent the past two days, with Bruininks, narrowing down a list of their favorite candidates to report to the consulting firm they hired so they can contact them and gauge interest.

Now that I agree with. Which is what scares me. I think Leach is a long shot as well. I jsut wish he wasn't because he would win 10 games here before almost any other choice. I just think Maturi isn't man enough to make that selection...

Yeah. I'm sold. It would be a shame if we didn't get him. He really isn't a spread-only guy. It was just the best way he could succeed with the type talent he could acquire. I'm convinced the guy is smart enough to adapt and find many ways to win.

New top 5: 1. Leach 2. Frazier 3. Bellotti 4. Calhoun 5. Sumlin

The polar opposite personalities and approaches of my top two choices should speak to the fact that I really don't care how we do it, as long as it works.

Maybe he will bring the wishbone here and people will be happy.

I'm sold too.

What he is looking for...

Commitment to academics? check. Commitment to winning? From what Bruincks and Maturi are saying, check. A supportive atmosphere for ALL SPORTS? This is Maturi's wet dream, no?

Hire him, ASAP.

He really did check all of Maturi's boxes in that interview (save for the run-first, Wisconsin carbon crap). It makes me wonder if it's his way of trying to throw his hat in to the ring. I hope Joel was listening.

He even pushed his Minnesota bonefides...

It seems Leach won't be considered in the top group, but Maturi would be wise to keep his name in he doesn't land one of the coaches that is in his top group of candidates. It would be a shame if Maturi passes Leach up because of his baggage and hires a lessor coach because of it.

If Maturi hires one of the top candidates for the job, I will be fine with him not considering Leach. However, if he hires some retread or Wisky boob, I will be irate about crossing Leach off the list so soon.

I agree.

I hold out hope that Maturi isn't really the one making the decision on this hire, and that what he is spewing is figurehead A.D. PR for public consumption.

I do not like the spread much, but I'll take a spread offense if Mike Leach is the coach running it. The weather strike against it is a total fallacy as well.

If they make a push for Mike Leach we will know without question they really are serious about making a statement and changing things in a serious way. ($$$$/ fully leveraging TCF, national profile, message to faculty eggheads, Voeltz militant left overs))

Belotti would be great, his age does not bother me. Barnett, if a bit younger would be good as well. Both of these guys know how to win with physical, fundamentally sound football .

For some reason I find Fulmer be unacceptable, even though he probably is in the same age range as Belotti.. He seems older, and "southern" coaches who have been spoiled with SEC talent ( also Richt) are a concern.

I don't think he handled the Walleye question very well. So I don't think he will pass the Minnesota-like part of the interview :D.

He really isn't a spread-only guy.

Huh?

He (along with Hal Mumme) is more or less the inventor of the spread offense. It's the only thing he's been working on, tinkering and perfecting, for over 20 years. On what planet is he not a spread-only guy?
