Strange timing for Maryland to be considering a buyout of Ralph Friedgen, after his team had a bounce back season:

Sources said that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach would be the leading candidate to replace Friedgen if he is forced into retirement....Leach has a close relationship with Under Armour, which is run by a former Maryland football player and has offices in nearby Baltimore.

That would make sense. He's gonna put a dent in some people recruiting in the DC area. Also, every defensive coordinator in the ACC just pee'd a little.

It seems like most of the sources for "Mike Leach is a candidate for ___" have turned out to be Mike Leach himself. :)

My only question would be "Is the former Maryland player who runs Under Armour a punter?"

Not true. Leach will not coach in NCAA in 2011. Leach will be a UFL coach with other pariahs Denny Green, Chris Palmer, Jeff Jagodzinski, Jay Gruden, and Jim Fassel.

How long do they have to spend in purgatory for their social failures? Jagodzinski should stay there forever, for being to stupid to read his boss' lips; first guy I have ever seen fire himself.

That was quick. Baltimore Sun reporting Friedgen out as coach (Tweet by Terps beat man).

I still don't see Leach getting hired as a head coach this year, but I do expect Leach fever to strike the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area very soon.

Leach's issues are far more than "social failures". He has repeatedly shown an almost pathological lack of respect for authority. You can count on one hand the number of coaches who have sued their employer--to coach a game. Though the James thing was overblown, over time he hung himself.

He is a typical super-smart guy that is so smart that he doesn't know what to do with himself. He is his own worst enemy and shows no signs of remorse or the ability to understand his impact on other people.

He is in a term, a liabilty and nightmare for any potential boss.

I still don't see any FBS school hiring this guy any time soon. He is a PR nightmare and even if he was able to be successful with a team on the field, he is not worth the risk off the field based upon all of the crap that occurred at Texas Tech.

Hasn't Maryland been the leading team to get Leach since he was fired at TT? If any program would take a chance at this point it sounds like Maryland.
Just saw this on Fox Sports, "According to reports, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is a possibility to replace Friedgen...Other candidates include former Washington coach Tyrone Willingham and current New Mexico coach Mike Locksley, according to ESPN.com". Sounds like it's Leach or the toilet at this point for Maryland.

Nice call "highwayman"

Maryland has attendance and longer term fanbase problems that Friedgen can't fix. In an area with the Redskins and the Ravens competing for football attention, the Terps get zero buzz. Navy has a better game day atmosphere. Though we all knew that Leach would never fly in Minnesota, he might be tolerated in DC if he can fill Byrd stadium.
