Chip has a huge dunk to pull the Gophers within 9. Minnesota goes down on defense, doubles the post and leaves the hottest shooter in the game about as open as a shooter can get, straight on no less, and it's nothing but net. Pathertic. Who does that? Honestly, what goes on in practice? How does a team REGESS to greatly like this? It's bizzare.

That's on the coach.

yeah it was bad. My understanding of basketball schemes and game planning is elementary at best and even I was lik uhhh who's got that guy......."swoosh".......never mind

We never seem to get open looks at threes (except for Williams and Al who can't shoot them). Hoffarber has to force most of his. Same with Devoe. Yet our opponents seem to get tons of them.

MSU was having a hard time scoring the three until we came to town. It's the same thing every single game. Our only defense against a three is to hope they miss them. We seem to have a very very hard time defending it.

MSU was making 39% of 3s and ranked #39 in the country. Today they made 33%. Facts matter.

Seriously, they made 33%. Nothing to complain about there.

FTB- I think the point is that we offer the openings. They shot 1-14 the first half but the open shots were there. If Izzo didn't like tha they were taking them they wouldn't have shot another 9 or 10 of them in the second half. What does it tell you about the coaching and defensive effort if you go out and face a team that is a good three point shooting team and you just surrender that shot to them all day. I'll have to check but I think we are about the worst team in the Big Ten year to date against the 3. The 3 point shot changes games too fast to continue to allow this.

Look at this- this is nuts! We are second worst in 3pt defense percentage wise but we are FAR and away the leader in allowing 3's:

3-POINT FIELD GOAL PCT DEFENSE
## Team G FG FGA Pct
---------------------------------------------
1.Purdue.............. 13 55 194 .284
2.Illinois............ 14 79 258 .306
3.Michigan............ 13 85 276 .308
4.Ohio State.......... 13 76 239 .318
5.Iowa................ 13 89 278 .320
6.Northwestern........ 10 58 181 .320
7.Indiana............. 14 78 241 .324
8.Michigan State...... 12 80 230 .348
9.Wisconsin........... 13 64 180 .356
10.Minnesota........... 13 114 310 .368
11.Penn State.......... 12 93 236 .394

I don't get this. We've got great shot blockers but we run around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to double down and chase the ball. For heaven's sakes play some straight up defense and guard the perimeter!

10th, ahead of PSU. Not sure how much it means with the variance in competition so far, though.

If you look at the chart in my post above- I don't think it matters. We are by so far and away offering up more opportunities for open threes that it's just crazy. Wisconsin, Purdue and NW are allowing just over half the attempts. MSU has played stiffer competition than us and has allowed 100 less attempts and a lower percentage. This isn't going to stop unless Tubby changes his focus on defense- which I doubt he will because he is stubborn to the max. Opposing coaches that have shooters will be dialing from 3 pt range early and often against us.

Why can't we put somebody in the face of the 3 point shooters and keep them there? We set pick after pick for Hoffarber, but there is nearly always someone in his face. Why can't we do that?

We can't shoot the jumper and we can't defense the jumper. WHY?????

I didn't really expect to win either of these games. But, I am hoping for some improvement.

Tubby's primary defense essentially makes it hard to take close-in shots, the trade-off being that it gives up a lot of open 3-point looks. It's aimed at making your opponents jump-shooting teams. Unfortunately, it's bitten us all year long.

We have the best 2 point percentage defense in the conference, but the worst 3 pt percentage defense in the conference. Basically, everything is going according to plan. Only teams shoot a lot more 3's and shoot them better than when Tubby was a younger man.

Personally, I'm ready to see a standard man to man defense rather than this ball-line defense automatically doubling the post.

+1. Well put.

Right on (+1). That is Tubby's defense.... Doubling the post is fine, but there has to be more thought and discipline in the game plan. Is it me, or is it just too logical to expect our coaches to communicate to the guards & wings which opposing post players are not worth leaving your man for. I for one would like to see a little more trust in the big guys defense, identify the best shooters, and lock them down - just like other teams do to us with Blake.

Actually, Wisconsin is slightly better at defensive 2P%, but yeah. Well put.

From the Barn said...MSU was making 39% of 3s and ranked #39 in the country. Today they made 33%. Facts matter.

Facts do matter. 7 of 10 threes in the second half. That's 70% for the half. As I said our only defense against the three is to hope like hell they miss them because we have a really hard time finding there three point shooters. Facts sometimes only tell HALF the story.

The key quote in that article is from Izzo. He said he thought 90% of the threes they shot in the first half were good shots to take and he told his players to keep taking them.

There's a coach that loves to go into the paint, adjusting because he knows we offer three point shots on every possession. He also knows it's only a matter of time that they would start falling like they did. If a team shoots 39% from three point land that's like shooting 60% on two pointers.
