Go Gophers!!

Um, what? Pretty sure the mood around here is Dallas or Detroit.

Most of these predictions are a moment in time, not a forecast of future games. Most fans (right or wrong) are looking at Dallas and Detroit in relation to our upcoming schedule.

If we "hold court" per se and keep with our current standing in the Big Ten, then hopefully a better bowl as is predicted now, comes to fruition.

Get to seven wins, and San Francisco seems fair.

The winner of this Saturday's Maryland-Penn State game is the most likely team from the group currently below us to jump in the bowl pecking order.

So much of it is based on geography. The Pinstripe bowl would almost certainly take a far eastern team (Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland) over us in order to better fill the stadium.

Remnd me, are there rules about jumping a team two ahead of you?

Are any of you taking into account ticket sales? Gophs have been passed over in the past for better bowl games because our fans don't travel well (see 1998 and 2003 Sun Bowls). We know Iowa will travel better than us. Or have things changed?

Bowl "invites" as they used to exist are a thing of the past. The bowls are now grouped into tiers, and will be assigned teams by the league office in an effort to provide the best matchups and avoid a repeat of recent visits. This, in theory, will help teams like Minnesota that do not have the history of bringing many fans to bowl games - especially this year, with how much the Big Ten's national reputation has suffered, I expect the league will prioritize putting the best teams in the best games for a chance to get wins.

Tier 1: Citrus (SEC), Outback (SEC), Holiday (Pac-12)
Tier 2: San Francisco (Pac-12), Gator/Music City (SEC), Pinstripe (ACC)
Tier 3: Detroit (ACC), Dallas (C-USA)

If both Michigan State and Ohio State make the Playoff/at-large berth in one of the "major" six bowls, then there will be a scramble for the team after Nebraska and Wisconsin to sneak into that first tier. Iowa-Minnesota could be a huge game in that regard, and as I said before, the winner of Maryland-Penn State will put itself in the conversation, too.

The Gophers will beat OSU, knocking them out of the playoff/major bowls, thus moving the Gophers down one bowl.

Phil Steele:

Sugar Bowl - Michigan State vs. Florida State
Peach Bowl - Ohio State vs. Georgia
Citrus Bowl - Nebraska vs. Auburn
Outback Bowl - Wisconsin vs. Missouri
Holiday Bowl - Iowa vs. UCLA
San Francisco Bowl - Minnesota vs. Arizona State
Gator Bowl - Maryland vs. LSU
Pinstripe Bowl - Rutgers vs. Boston College
Quick Lane Bowl - Penn State vs. Pitt
Heart of Dallas Bowl - Northwestern vs. Texas State

Sporting News:

Orange Bowl - Michigan State vs. Clemson
Cotton Bowl - Ohio State vs. Kansas State
Citrus Bowl - Nebraska vs. Auburn
Outback Bowl - Wisconsin vs. Ole Miss
Holiday Bowl - Minnesota vs. USC
San Francisco Bowl - Iowa vs. Stanford
Gator Bowl - Maryland vs. LSU
Pinstripe Bowl - Penn State vs. Virginia Tech
Quick Lane Bowl - Rutgers vs. Virginia
Heart of Dallas Bowl - Northwestern vs. Washington

Looks like they are predicting Ohio State to win the Big Ten but not qualify for the playoff, since the B1G champ is not eligible play in the Orange Bowl, which is where they slot Michigan State.

A very good explanation of the situation - great post!

I wouldn't be optimistic if they landed in the Holiday against a top 4 PAC 12 team or had to face an SEC team higher than 7th or 8th best. The Pinstripe, with a mid-level ACC team, would appear to be the best matchup for them of the second tier bowls.
