I don't think Teague is selling this well enough. For any coach who wants to coach in the Big Ten, this is the last job that will be open for quite some time.

Mich, Mich St., Indiana, OSUand Wisconsin... all have great coaches who aren't going anywhere.
Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois - Both have brand new coaches who are doing well. They are safe for probably 4 years or so.
Purdue is solid with Painter
NW - Just hired a new coach

Penn State could be looking for someone new in a year or two, but that's Penn St. Rutgers?

What is he selling instead?

I think he means that he should do a better job with the media. Clearly the national media, and even the local media is saying the Minnesota job is trash.

He can't control the media, I don't like that they trash the U in almost all reports and for all major sports, but Teague can't control that. He'd look bad too if he tried to.

Maybe he is selling that aspect, but B1G jobs just don't open every day.

I'm not saying he can control the media, but there is public relations management that could be done.

And its the local media and national media driving the story. They started with Firing Tubby was wrong. Then they proposed candidates, then shot them down. Teague has said nothing. No one knows who his candidates are, who he has contacted and who he has not. And now the "Slog" begins. If your perception is what the media projects, take a deep breath. There are not that many openings, and only one Big 10 Coaching job. There are a few Big 10 Jobs which are truly nowhere. Penn State, Northwestern, and Nebraska. The next 4 are above average Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois. Then the elite, Michigan State, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State.

Did you read the OP? I didn't even say I agreed with his point, I was just trying to clarify what he was saying. Personally, my hope was that Flip would get hired and that's still a possibility I suppose. I think it'll work out, that being said, Teague hasn't released any information, even if it was just to quell some rumors, that could do wonders for the PR. Right now we all look bad because of what seems to be his lack of action. (I believe he's doing a lot, but that isn't the perception of the media)

Stuff happens. I'll bet at least 2 HC jobs open up in the next 2 years.

Penn State will open in the next two years.
Also there is always Maryland and Rutgers.

Never know which of the top Big Ten coaches will leave.
If you want to be in a good basketball conference, with the conference realignment, Big Ten is probably the 2nd best choice out there next to the ACC.

The Minnesota job and what's the other?

Not necessarily calling my shots, just stuff happens. I bet if you went back through history the conference's coaches haven't stayed static for 2 years straight in many years. Rutgers has a coach averaging 5 wins a year in conference, and I'm sure someone retires, changes jobs, gets ill, has a scandal, etc.

I wrote this much earlier. The Football board was all over getting Tony Dungy. And when he said he had no interest but would help there was a gasp. We never heard if there was a serious offer, or just an opening contact, or a interview with the media. Now we turn to Flip. Did Teague make an offer? Or did someone report Flip had no interest and it was spun from that to he turned down an offer. Neither candidate was a serious candidate. And now all we hear is the sky is falling. Relax.

Except on KFAN Flip said he would accept the job if offered to him. Dungy said no such thing.

I never heard it reported that Flip said he would accept the job if offered to him. Doogie and others speculated that he would accept the job if offered.

Norwood protected the University with a very big Buy Out clause if Flip decided to return to the NBA. This is a show stopper for Flip. Also, there is some common sense in not allowing Universities to hire their relatives to work directly for them. It usually never ends well............

There is also the aspect that coaching in the Big Ten may not be the most attractive thing for some coaches.

The Big Ten is so competitive, that its hard to win in the Big Ten.

Some coaches may not want to come into a job knowing that they are starting out basically in 8th place and needing to work VERY hard and pass up some well established programs just to get into the Top 7 in the conf.

They may see what happened to Tubby. He had what some people consider to be a somewhat successful season. All they heard about was the win over IU maybe? The win over UCLA in the tourney?! But the coach then still gets fired?!

They may see coming into a job in the Big Ten as a tough gig. Something an Asst Coach would be willing to take a risk on if he felt like his options were otherwise drying up? Something a mid-major coach might take a risk doing, if not at a place like VCU where they treat the coach like the king of the world.

So yes, the Big Ten is a great conference, and that could almost be hurting us to some extent, depending on who the coach is of course. Some might love the challenge, while the next guy may want the easier route because he might be more concerned with job security?

Do you see any chance that Flip and the U could come to some agreement possibly? Or do you think its probably never going to happen?

Me too - some of the newbie coaches if they do real well could get jumped on by elites looking to fill a retirement. All openings aren't because the coach gets fired.

And then today future B1G coach Mike Rice has an extremely damning video of him showing fireable conduct released all over TV and the Web. Like I said...stuff happens.
