I'll be honest, I haven't dove much into Medved and CSU. But I keep seeing Evans' name come up and saying he would be the best player to play for the Gophs in the past decade.

Is there something I'm missing? He's obviously a good player for a sophomore but on paper there's nothing that blows me away as someone that would change a program.

he isn't but its the same stuff that comes up from rubes watching the MN state hockey tournament and clamoring for the Gophers to sign certain guys. he played very well (probably his best game of the season vs Memphis) so people love to think that must be how he is every game

I haven't seen people say he would be the best player for the Gophs in a decade. He's nowhere near that level of a player. However, he is a very good player and would love to have him.

He’s heading into the prime of his college career. You can’t have too many good guards and ball handlers. The program would be unwise to not have him here if he is willing. Strikes me as a classic under the radar guy developed by a good coach.

He's undersized, but 45% from 3pt and 85% from the FT line doesn't excite you?

I admittedly haven't scouted his defensive prowess. Still, offensively, he's better than pretty much every SG guard Ben ever brought in (besides Christie) and would be a hell of a building block (especially paired with Asuma).

I also love he's from a winning program, not from the bottom feeders in low-level conferences.

I wouldn't say best player for the Gophs in the last decade. But...this is a kid who shoots the 3 at 45%, plays smart and has a great handle. Huge to get him here.

The bolded is what I'm most excited about. Ben Johnson was never on a winner and didn't know the feeling since HS. Niko brings a winning culture that hopefully translates to MN.

I'll take his stats, experience, and familiarity in year one.

Evans is going to have his pick of schools if he decides to leave CSU—-and a bag full of $$$—-be interesting to see how Niko does in his first major recruiting battle.

I've already read that he's way out of our price range.

So many experts. Let's wait and see.

i made that comment as a bit of tongue in cheek........but shooting 6-9 from 3 point range in an NCAA tournament game will get you noticed.....

He’s a quality player who is already familiar with the coach and the system, sign me up as being in support.

Love that Asuma hasn't gone in the portal which means he is likely planning to stick around (although these days nothing is ever certain). Gives Medved a nice starting point to build around
Grove is a very good shooting and passing big man which fits his offense perfectly if Rigsby got his extra doesn’t look like he’s leaving either. He would fit as well.

Rigsby is intriguing if he ends up getting another year and sticks around. He was a non-factor in a lot of games and he was one of if not our best player in others.

Will be very interesting to see how Medved constructs this first roster. He has a lot of roster spots to work with and there are tons of players already in the portal.

I think he focuses on guys who fit his system. Guys who can shoot and play team first ball. I’m sure he might take a couple one year rentals but I bet he focuses on guys with more eligibility than that.

One of my issues with CBJ is I don't feel he was particularly adept at putting players in the best positions to succeed. Some of his rotations and utilization were mind boggling. Function of inexperience in running a full team IMHO.

not after 4 years....it was just an odd stubbornness that he wanted to force his rotations to work

If someone dominated in the Mtn West they would be at least better than average in the bigten. Evans was a nice player, great shooter. I'm not sure where the decade hyperbole came from? He was the 3rd best wing on CSU!

Being 6-2 180, He needs a bigger lead guard like Assuma, Evans can guard the pg. After watching last year's team shoot 32% on 3's, a soph who shoots it that well has a spot!

Will be interesting to see what he brings in for sure. When Johnson came on board there was a lot of unknown as to who would or would not be back initially. For Medved there are just a handful of potential holdovers and a lot of open spots to work with.

I agree that he is unlikely to go with a lot of 1 and done types but this portal period will give us an indication of how he likes to do things since he has a bunch of openings.

The reality of college basketball is that nothing roster wise is guaranteed year to year. Hell, Bleed posted a graphic in another thread showing where the starters on each of the sweet 16 started their careers and for about half the teams it is a crap shoot as to who that team is because maybe 1 or in some cases none of the starters actually began their career at that school.

Optimistic scenario (7)
Grove
Asuma
Lock in 2 of 3 Ben recruits
Bring 2 guys from CSU
CSU recruit -McIver

Surprise (1)
Garcia

In a super optimistic scenario - all of above happen- he'd need 5 portal guys
But he could need 10 portal guys or more

I would hope that he goes for only a couple seniors and the rest have more eligibility remaining

Unless Thorson stays, not sure you get any of Ben's recruits.
