Just wanted to take this oppurtunity to heap some praise upon Joe Coleman, someone I admonished earlier in the season when he had several games with huge amounts of turnovers. I've noticed his progression and growth over the past month on both ends of the court.

In Monday's game he didn't do anything overly spectacular but he was careful with the ball and made some sound decisions. He also had 3 steals, 2 blocks and a very nice assist to Mbakwe during our big run. If Joe can stay within himself and continue the growth, it bodes well for our chances.

If everyone plays within their abilities this team is close to unbeatable. Just don't try to do too much.

I totally agree. His growth in a relatively short time is fantastic. He is our one player that continues to be fearless when attacking the basket and he had a couple of aggressive plays early against Michigan State that helped set an early tone for us.

Go Gophers!!

Andre is also fearless and that is good. Maverick is also fearless and that is not so good.

Hopefully Coleman continues his progression. Next year with Trevor and Rodney gone, he is (i am guessing) going to be the #2 scoring option and will have to play more minutes. Hopefully he continues his improvement. I could see him being a 14 point per game player and an all conference type by the time he is a senior...

I don't see Coleman being ahead of Austin as a scoring option, but Coleman will indeed have to be one of the top scorers next year.

Fair enough. I guess I view him as more of a scorer and Austin as more of an all around player doing some of everything. Could go either way, IMO...

Very true. I nearly broke the tv when Rodney started taking those shots. I am glad that he stopped.

I agree, but let's face it - if Rodney never shoots from beyond 10 feet, his defender can play well off of him. True, he has to sink a few to make it work, but he has earlier in the season, and his vastly-improved FT percentage (starting late last year, it seems to me) bodes well for him dropping a few of those midrange jumpers.

Just seven turnovers in the past seven games for him. Good to see. He passed the ball well Monday.

Coleman has improved a lot since the season started. He has reduced his turnovers and become a consistent scorer. The Gopher starting 5 compares well to any starting 5 in the B1G.

Yes Kudos to Joe, but he is still completely lost on defense on half of the plays. Hopefully he can shape that up too.

I think he does just fine on defense. He had 3 steals and 2 blocks the other day...Are you saying he gets out of position chasing in our zone? Or are you talking man to man?

Wow, is that stat accurate? I'm not doubting you, that just seems so low. I will admit to being about as down on Joe as probably anyone on here, but if he can cut down on the turnovers to that level on a consistent basis (and staying there), I would change my tune really quick.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but Coleman has more rebounds than Eliason.

+1

I watched the NDSU game twice. IMO, Joe did not get beat by T. Braun when he stuck to him. Joe has a tendancy to sag off his man and go for steals and rebounds. He is a very good rebounder for his size. If his man starts to hit shots he will man up and shut him down. Joe did fine against MSU. I think he was on Valentine or Harris most of the time.

FWIW, I thought Harris looked very good, smooth. I think MSU will do fine. Their fans were down on Dawson but IIRC his ACL injury was just before the B1G tournament. Amazing he has come back so fast.

From what I've seen (the NDSU game and Michigan St. game) T Braun was killing him. It seems he has a tendency to lose his defender helping out, and in turn gives up wide open looks. Not sure if this has gotten better, but I noticed it once or twice during the MSU run. He is extremely phyisical and gifted athlete it just seems sometimes his IQ is catching up. Mabye I'm being too critical, but that would explain his good defensive stats, but also at times being out of position.

I love Joe's physicality. His toughness is above average for a sophomore. He seems very determined and that will go a long way in his overall improvement.
