KMSP: Anti-racism coalition threatens to sue U of M over Redskins name

The National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media is threatening to sue the University of Minnesota if they use the Washington Redskins name when the team travels to TCF Bank Stadium to play the Vikings on Nov. 2.

According to the facility use agreement, the Vikings have full jurisdiction over TCF Bank Stadium on NFL game days, but NCRSM director Clyde Bellecourt says they want the U of M to enforce its contract to ban the Redskins name from the stadium and get the Vikings to ban Redskins jerseys and face paint from the game.

Gee, contract enforcement? This is market regulated, capitalistic country that takes contract law seriously. If there is a clause, there is a clause. If the U has reason to act to deny the Redskins name then this is not a frivolous lawsuit. Saddle up, boys, the natives are restless.

I think this is the same organization that threatened to sue Warroad HS over the use of their Warrior's mascot. They finally dropped the lawsuit and admitted they didn't know what the hell they were doing after finding out from an Ojibwe alum and former Olympian, that the school has a significant Native population that supports the name as well as the history of the town (named after the War Road used during conflicts between Native tribes).

That being said, the threat to sue the U is absolutely absurd. I truly hope they do and the U counter sues them because they would win. Take those clowns for every last penny.

The expectation I have is they may open up their checkbook again for the Athletes Village if they get some respect over the Redskins issue. Frankly, if I was the U, I would pay attention to a major donor group. They have "skin" in the game, and we have an interest in the outcome. I don't know about you folks, but I always go back to the well that brought me some sweet tasting water. When the Nations gave us the mall around TCF, that was a very large donation and with it came some stipulations and contract terms about conduct at the U, which if nothing else is implied.

Life isn't always about being emotionally and intellectually stupid. Sometimes it is about living up to the standards of your friends. The Indian Nations of Minnesota have been the U's friend and many on this board have forgotten how to treat their friends.
