Kirkwood got his medical red-shirt?

The article appears to be about a new visitor this weekend.

But the little preview part says:

GI.com has confirmed an addition to Minnesota's visit list for this upcoming weekend, confirmed solid commitment and news of a medical redshirt.

With a big pic of Kirkwood, I'd have to assume those are linked.

Per the University of Minnesota Athletic Department...

Kirkwood Granted Medical Hardship Waiver

University of Minnesota running back Donnell Kirkwood has been granted a
medical hardship waiver by the Big Ten Conference. Kirkwood’s participation
in the 2010 season will not count against him and he will have four seasons
of eligibility remaining.

“This is great news for Donnell and for our football program,” head coach
Jerry Kill said. “We’re happy for him and we appreciate all those who
assisted in getting the waiver approved.”

Kirkwood rushed for 107 yards on 27 carries, averaging 4.0 yards per carry,
early in the 2010 season before missing the remainder of the year with a leg
injury.

So...

does that mean 2010 was like his red-shirt year, or does he still have five years to play four?

Good to hear. He was really starting to show something before he got injured.

That means 2010 was his RS season. He will be a RS FR next season.

Awesome! Does anyone think that this may mean that Edwards or Wright will change positions now? (assuming Wright is eligible) I'd imagine they wouldn't want three good athletes from one class at one position.

Hopefully Kirkwood's good news bodes well for Royston as well. Different circumstances, I know. Just trying to be positive.

Are they recruiting Perine as a DE or a LB? He seems on the small side for a DE.

He'll be 240, easy, before he ever sees the field - plenty big enough to play rush end in Claeys' defense.

Great news about Kirk'land'! I wondered about him this past season.. I guess I didn't hear anything about his injury.

Whatever, that's awesome he's got 4 full seasons ahead of him.. Could be a solid B1G player.

Actually it could mean worse news for Royston. It would be unusual for two medical redshirts to be granted in one year to the same program.

hasn't he also applied?[ Brandon Green/QUOTE]

This shouldn't be a problem from what I have heard since he hasn't used his RS. The bigger question is "if" he can play again. Somone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Wouldn't that be more of a probability thing than a "feels like they are playing favorites thing?"

I mean, the NCAA is a fair and just institution, after all ;)

The medical hardship waiver (like Kirkwood and Rallis got) is merely a mathematical formula, it really isn't possible for the NCAA to play favorites when it comes to awarding these medical hardship waivers.

I think you could make an argument that the NCAA might not want to grant two sixth years of eligibility to the same team because those decisions require more discretion.

I don't think the Kirkwood or Green situation should have any bearing on Kim Royston.

Check the GPA on Perine. I am not sure I would take a risk on him with only a 2.5. Mine wasn't the best in highschool either but I wasn't trying to play a sport in college either. Apparently Carter is gone to SCum already. What a dbag to switch so soon after committing.
