I think many of the naysayers here will be surprised by how effective Kill will be in delivering WINS for the Gophers. He is a proven success. His teams are disciplined and interesting to watch. He now now just has a chance to do it on a bigger stage. He deserves it- look at what he has done at SIU and NIU. He was a national coach of the year in 2007- let's give him a chance!

Success is relative, please explain how Kill will have success relative to the other teams in the Big Ten West? Step back and think about what he needs to accomplish and against whom he will be measured and then present and objective argument. Jerry Kills' record is impressive but he hasn't face 1/10th the schedule he will here at UMN.

He's proven he can win with 3 star recruits. He has proven to get the best out of his teams. His teams have beaten Division 1 teams and have sailed through his own conference- undefeated this year, I believe. I could be wrong, but after my initial disappointment, this hire is beginning to grow on me.

You aren't looking at the Big Ten West, he will need to beat Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, and Northwestern consistently to have a shot at being a success.

Who is to say Leach, Petersen or any other marquee-level coach would do better over the next year or two? Perhaps there's some substance to the rumors that the big name coaches didn't want to come here and compete against the Big Ten powerhouses year in and year out. Kill has proven he can coach up players and win wherever he goes, and apparently he isn't afraid of failure or hard work unlike some other candidates.

Two years of watching Gray run wild could convince a lot of players that Minnesota has a brighter future ahead of us.

In his very first game as NIU coach, he took a team that went 2-10 and 1-6 in the MAC the year before into their game against Minnesota and almost beat us! Took us to the last play of the game. We went on to win seven games that year.

What can he do with a lot more talent in his first game with the U?

He will be lucky to recruit 1 star recruits...

That goes with being the Gopher HC. Easy job huh?

As I made a thread earlier today, Kill will win no beauty/flashy contest, but he is a coaches coach. The man has won everywhere he has gone. I will tell you this, if he looked like Edsall, more people would be singing a different tune. Just because he doesn't look the part doesn't mean he isn't a very good coach. Also just because he comes from a MAC school, doesn't mean he can't be great. If that was the case guys like Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Gary Pinkel would have never been given the chance.

What you will get from Kill is a team that plays very hard, hard nosed, disciplined, and develops quality kids on and off the field... I saw that first hand when he was at Emporia State.

I don't expect you guys to be happy about the hire, but your getting a very good coach. Give him a chance, more than likely he will surprise you.

I agree 100% with this. If you are Chris Petersen, would you take the risk to come to Minnesota to compete with a team that hasn't been at the top of the heap? He saw what happened to Hawkins at Colorado. He'll hold out for the perfect job, at a helmet school. He might even go to an Iowa or Wisconsin that has had recent success. But the Gophers for him are a risk, and I'm guessing many other top coaches would feel that way. Kill is right in the mold of the guy we should have expected. Anything more would have been gravy. He's out to prove he can win at this level, and until proven otherwise, I'm all on board.

I agree with KU4LIFE- and hey, for all of you bald overweight, former weekend athletes- like me- let's support our brother!

To be honest, I think that is why most people don't like this hire. They look in the mirror and they see themselves in Jerry Kill. But if you knew you knew football and were a good coach, would you be leery to think if people would give you a chance by the way you look?

Sometimes the big name isn't the best fit for your job. Find someone that fits what you need and go from there. Kill fits the BIG 10 mold as a head coach when your dealing with football qualities.

Its a long way . . .

from Carbondale and Dekalb to Columbus, Madison, Iowa City and Omaha, despite what it might say on the map. Basically Kill has had his success playing with the players that Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana and Iowa don't want. They don't want them for a reason. It is doubtful that week in and week out they will be able to stand up to the athletes being fielded by our opponents.

Unlike those head coaches who have worked their way up through the system at a major program as assistants who were responsible for recruiting blue-chip players, Kill has never had to do that. He could wait to see what would drop to him. I seriously doubt that he will be able to turn that on now. I don't see that any big time recruit is now going to say, "oh wow, Coach Kill is at Minnesota, that is where I have to be." Even Brewster had experience recruiting blue chippers while with Mac Brown. This guy, not so much. In the end, you can only "coach em up" so much.

Apparently Maturi, or should I say MACturi, thinks that if you can win in the MAC, it is the same as big time sports. It isn't. That is why we line up the MAC teams for our cupcake games every fall. I will grant you that this year Coach Kill got lucky and got to play a Brewster coached team, but most of the time that does not work out that way. We are now even behind Indiana as a school where no top flight player will go.

at NIU

Kill played 5 B10 teams all on the road going 2-3

don't think playing a B10 schedule will be to big of a stage for him.

I am truly sick to my stomach! A MAC Coach? Seriously? Wow, can you hear the laughing coming from Wisconsin and Iowa?

Will we make it to a Rose Bowl with Kill? TBA

will we be good enough to keep him here for 8 years? Yes.

Did you overlook the fact . . .

In his very first game as NIU coach, he took a team that went 2-10 and 1-6 in the MAC the year before into their game against Minnesota and almost beat us! Took us to the last play of the game. We went on to win seven games that year.

that he was playing Brewster.

hillbilly gopher. Perfect moniker. How about at least an accurate presentation of our status?

More important

It isn't what you and I think of how Kill looks, it is how the recruits perceive him. How do you think the blue chippers will accept him? Who do you think they will have more confidence in, Kill or Ferenz? Who do you think they will see more as a leader, Kill or Bret Bielema? I am not too confident that we will win more than we lose.
