Not sure if this has been pointed out before or anything, but if the Gophers win against Purdue this Saturday, Kill will pass Mason in terms of conference winning %. Kill would be at .407 (11-16) and Mason was .400 (32-48). I'm not saying Kill is officially better than Mason, just a funny stat.

This couldve been epic if it happened a month or so ago.

I support Kill and supported the administration's decision to get rid of Mason, but this is ridiculous. When Kill gets somewhere close to Mason's 80 B1G games, there will be an apt comparison.

The big differences between Kill and Mason are: (1) Kill's teams don't blow leads in the second half; and (2) Kill will be embarrassed and blame himself if he ends his career at the U with a Big 10 winning percentage of only 40%.

Both good football coaches. Kill has the better staff; especially on the defensive side.

The question (at least in my mind) was never whether or not Kill could match Mason level success. The question has always been and still remains as to whether or not Kill can take that next step that Mason never could and take the program to an even higher level.

You're correct sir, but there will still be people on here turning it into a pissing contest.

Both great coaches that I support(ed) and am glad they were/are a part of this great Univesity.

Not sure it's an apt comparison. Mason never had the level of administration support, staff salaries, or gameday facility that Kill has enjoyed. That is to take nothing away from Kill especially given what he has gone through personally while accomplishing a lot professionally. I just don't think we'll ever know what Mason could have done with more support and better facilities.

What was Mason's winning % after 27 B1G games? That would be the more apt comparison.

Glen also never had the commitment to Minnesota that Kill seems to have. He did a very good job, a great job maybe, up until the time that tOSU skipped over him and took Jim Tressel instead. Never heard Mason come out and say it, but have heard him say many times that he do things differently at Minnesota if he could do things over again.

Maybe he was talking about recruiting, or defense or his actions that last season. Maybe all three. Or maybe he would have simply decided that here is where he wanted to stay.

Think he could have done a great job then too.

Oh, as for passing Mason overall, it's still to early to make that call either way.

To answer my own question, Mason's record through 27 was 10-17. He also won the next one against Ohio St. to make it 11-17 and finished that year 12-20.

Through 27 games, Mason had a 10-17 BT record. If the Gophers win on Saturday, Kill will have an 11-17 record.

It's a bit subjective to look at historically, but I don't think the college football facilities/recruiting arms race was as white hot back when Mason took over as it is today.

Absolutely correct. Does anyone doubt that Kill has more commitment and has put in significantly more effort than Mason into turning the Gophers into a program that wins more Big 10 games than it loses? Am I the only who remembers that Mason was always trying to find a better job while he was coaching the Gophers?

Wouldn't everyone do things differently if they had a second chance? JK has had a plan since he became a head coach and it works every time.

So what would Kill do differently?

No.

I used to love watching Mason's ream run the FB. We could run on anybody. The idea that Kill has passed Mason in % only means that the program has turned upward. This is no slam against Mason.

As bad as thing were when kill took over, mason took over a much worse program.

When kill took over he was taking over a team that was less than 10 years removed from a 10 win season. The program was 2 year removed from back to back bowl seasons.

The roster may have been just as bad or worse, but the program was in much better shape for kills first year.
