Kill and Diamonds in the ruff.

The wrestling is the big one. If I was a coach, I'd offer the heavyweight wrestling champ a football scholarship pretty much every year, regardless of whether or not he played a down on the gridiron. Good football players, especially people on or around the line, that are also good wrestlers pan out at an extremely high rate.

heres a few wrestlers that turned into good football playershttp://www.sectiononewrestling.com/documents/nfl_players_wrestled.html

And one former Gopher football player who turned into a pretty good wrestler...

Kill grabbed Trevor Olson from Richfield who is a solid offensive lineman. Olson is a high school coach's kid who knows the game who didn't get much of a sniff from Brewster. (Also played hockey and golf, too.) Olson is 6'6" and 306 lbs. He was also named first-team all conference in the MAC.

(He also has a kid brother who is senior in high school, 6-4, 255-pound, and plays left tackle and defensive end.)

The Gophers aren't going to matter if they can't find these types of in-state kids who are smart players with room to grow. It's one thing to grab some speed from the south. It's another thing to overlook what's in your own backyard to get players that are comparable, if not worse.

I think Brewster did well by and large on the recruiting trail, but one of the biggest jobs he had was to keep kids in state that were leaving. The Gophers still lose a fair amount of elite recruits each year. Hopefully the Gophers can win some games and reverse that trend.

Kill actually didn't recruit him, but he did groom him. Trevor was there in 2007 and Kill came in 2008. I actually saw Trevor and his dad at the Richfield/Holy Angel's basketball game tonight. He is one big dude. He was proudly wearing his Northern Illinois letter jacket.
