I was catching up on my reading last night, and finally made it through my copy of last week's SI. In reading the above article, this is the part that really stuck out to me as a Gophers fan:
"Lane took that job [Raiders] because, as he told me, it's hard to get a good college job unless you've been a head coach somewhere," says Monte. "He'd been spoiled at Southern Cal, and the only job he wanted was a head job at a big school. He didn't have any interest in working his way up at small schools."
I think that tells us all we need to know about how his tenure here would've gone. At that point, he was looking to get a HC job anywhere he could. He would have worked his ass off here, and left town for a "better" job the second he was able. That may not have happened because he spent his formative years and graduated from HS here, but I don't think even that is enough to convince him that Minnesota is a "big school".
My guess? 3 or 4 wins in 2007, 8 or 9 wins in 2008, and he would still be the head coach at Tennessee (or wherever) in 2009 anyway, while we would have just hired a new coach. Instead, we have Brewster firmly entrenched and things on the way up for 2009 and beyond. Despite what GG (and others) may think, I feel we got the better end of the deal.
