On the plus side, trends for recruiting, defense, STs, bowl appearances and program promotion in-state/nationally all seem generally positive.

What are the defensive statistics for the same years?

If we are going to judge a coach only on his offensive output, we should have just kept Mason.
Give me a defensive oriented team any day. For me a blindside hit on the QB is the most exciting play in sports. I hope to never witness a game where the gophers have 500+ yards and still lose ever again. Offense gets the glory, defense wins the game.

Mason

Simply put, if Mason would have had a great defense to go with his offenses he would still be coaching here. Mason had too much turnover at his D-Coord coaches. Anyone agree?

And the Gophers defense did everything they possibly could do vs. Iowa -- and we still lost 12-0.
You have to have an offense, too. It's still a good chunk of the game.
If you have a terrible defense, you lose, but if you have a terrible offense, you still lose.

I can agree with that. His biggest problem is he never seemed to get those really good defensive players (or enough of them.) If he would have had a good defense, he probably would have been able to go to the Rose Bowl but it's like he ignored the defense when he was recruiting a lot of the time. I think it was BleedGopher's signature.........."Recruit Defense!!!"

The key barrier to Brewster earning an extension is surpassing his predecessor. Brewster was brought in to do better than Mason. If going 7-5 every year then going to a crapazz bowl was acceptable, we shouldn't have fired Glen.

So far, Brewster has not shown he can do that. Yeah, he's improved many things, including PR, the defense and recruiting. But the program has regressed in other areas. Offense, as others have pointed out, and his relationship with the media is even more poisonous than Glen's ever was (in fairness to Brewster, much of this isn't his fault and may be beyond his control. But bottom line, Brewster hasn't delivered more wins, or gotten us to a higher tier of postseason bowl games. He's gotten us back to the point of getting jobbed by the Alamo bowl, but that was Glen's peak, too.

Now I'm sure someone will slam me saying that Brewster needs an extension in order to recruit effectively. There's some truth to that, although I think that gets blown out of proportion. To me, its a chicken/egg thing.

I agree about the extension. If he doesn't get it, certainly other coaches will use it against him. But if gets a 2-year extension, how much better are recruits really going to feel? They're not stupid. They know if we tank next year he'll be gone. And even if he goes 6-6 or 7-5 and hangs on for a year beyond, the chances that they'll play 4 years for him aren't good. The reality is that Brew's seat is now officially toasty. If it wasn't 48 hours ago, it surely is now. And no 2-year extesnion done to save face is going to change that. He's going to have to 'recruit through' it somehow.

Yep we did, I'm just saying I would rather have a chance in a close game, than always be melting down defensively late in games. Believe it or not, we had a very good chance to win that game, we didn't, but it was sure closer than the game in 05 where we gave up 613 yards and were down 35-0 in the first half. Our offense couldn't do jack against Greenway and his D until they called off the dogs. Defense gives you a chance to win on the road.

Yes, I can certainly agree with all that. You have to build your program with a strong defense and neither Mason or Wacker managed to do that. I like the defensive recruits that Brewster has been bringing in and that could be a strong core in a couple years....well hopefully next year.

i dont remember reading anything about mason and his coaching in the local media unless he was blowing a 4th quarter lead to wisky, mich, texas tech. mason didnt do enough to have beef with the media as well as he didnt do anything to piss them off either

In terms of total yards, this is what I found on rivals.yahoo.com:

Offense
2004: 446 = 13th
2005: 499 = 5th
2006: 369 = 40th
2007: 408 = 50th
2008: 322 = 91st
2009: 296 = 114th

Defense:
2004: 409 = 88th
2005: 408 = 91st
2006: 417 = 111th
2007: 519 = 118th
2008: 378 = 75th
2009: 364 = 61st

These don't appear to include bowl games, but it clearly shows over the 3 year averages of each coach, -96ypg offensively and +9ypg defensively. Granted Brewster's first year defensively sucked and he's vastly improved the defense, but he's lost more on the offense in that time -- so overall he's still subpar in this sense.

If you throw out Brewster's first year, his defenses have been on average very similar to Mason's. How we didn't win more games between '02-'04 boggles my mind.
