Maybe a trip down memory lane will give you some perspective. Now, the game has change but facts are facts. Many will point to the Mason 1999 Defense as bench mark. They gave up 172 points in the season, before bowl game. That was 26.8 papgm. But if you go back to 1977 I think you have the modern record. That team gave up 163 points. Pitched three shutouts. And had a 14.8 papgm. The current defense is at 18.67 papgm.

Let's hold off judgment until November 29. I'm not ready to crown this defense after having played 1 good team, 4 dumpster fires, and a squad of nerds.

I'm a little less confident about our defense after the NW game, but I'm still trying to keep things in perspective. After the game Saturday, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine and we were trying to figure out why our D struggled so much against the Wildcats. Then it occurred to us that we only gave up about 300 yards, and it wasn't too long ago that a stat like that would have thrilled Gopher fans. The fact that the NW game was a little concerning shows how far the defense has come.

+1. Good post.

The 1st Team Defense seems okay to about their own 30-35 yard line. Good from there to the Red Zone and great from the 10 on in.

In 1989 it did take 8 games to identify the defense. That team gave up 518 points, no offense can overcome an average of 47.1 papgm

If by 518, you mean 283, then ya they gave up 518 points.

Gave up 283 from what I can see. Sure you have the correct year?

Edit....didn't see you had replied, afurry

How good?

Better than it should be with a handful of true FR playing significant time on the DL. I'm absolutely amazed that Elmore and Richardson have held up they way they have. They have saved the season pretty much.

Pretty damn good. Bend, not break is kind of a cheesy phrase....but it is relevant. Crazy to think that one or two players can make or break the team. Wilson didn't have an amazing offer list......but holy crap......he's going to the NFL. Our linebacking crew would be rough without him. Unlike the helmet schools who have lines of talent.......one signing can be the difference between a good or a great season. The Vikes should grab this guy.

Campbell passed on a few good programs to come here. Awesome for this team. He'll be one of our leaders next season. I don't think we have to wonder whether he'll be drafted......just when he'll be drafted.

Who could have predicted how good these guys would be? We kind of knew that Richardson flew under the radar.......but many of us had doubts about how he would be able to contribute right off the bat. KFAN's Gopher pundits mentioned him as an extremely impressive freshman. No kidding. The loss of Ekpe looked like a major dagger. Richardson stepped up. He will make the all big ten freshman team.......and will probably receive some consideration for the all big ten teams.

I know that Elmore wanted to stick as a TE......but he's going to be a star on the defensive line. Much like Hageman (who began as a TE).....he's got a path paved in gold. Athletic monster. Along with Maxx and BBC, he may have the highest ceiling of anyone on this team.

I had the wrong year but the correct total it was 1983. That 518 is correct, and the when you give up 47.1

It only seemed like 518 points since they must have given up about 300 in the second half to Ohio State that year to blow that game.
