It is too bad that Julius Pearlt (may his soul rest in peace) can not still be announcing the games. I don't know how many times his voice alone could make the games exciting. I was at the Minn-USC game in '68. I remember as if it were yesterday his announcing the first Gopher TD. "Touchdown...Parsonnnnnnnnn!!!"

I actually smiled sitting at my desk just by reading his name.

I remember him announcing "Please do not throw snow balls on to the field!" during the last game at Memorial Stadium. We didn't listen, but hey Bucky Badger and the Scony Cheerleaders had the gall to run around past the student section during the game.

I remember being at the old stadium and people were writing Fire Cal in snow along the top of the stadium.

I guess things really don't change that much, do they?

It's sad that beyotching and moaning about football coaches is what we remember most about our undergrad days.

I am remember him saying the scores:

iowa 6 Indiana 27

He always had the pause in there to make a little drama-I MISS THOSE DAYS!

Oh....good call. I forgot about that. I LOVED that.

Are scores too plebian to be announced at today's games?

I noticed his voice on a couple of the games replayed on the Big 10 network. Brought back some great memories. Much better than "and that's another Golden Gopher first down"

He Always Announced The Score for Slippery Rock

and drew a huge roar every time.

Some of my favorite names to hear him call:

Football: Mecklenberg, Wackbecker (sp?), Kullas, Elmer Bailey

Basketball: Oooooo- lberding, Landsberger

Young kids have no idea how good he was. I grew-up thinking that was what an announcer was suppost to sound like.

I remember Julius Pearlt doing the state basketball tournament games in either 1975 or 1976. Chisholm had a shooting guard with a last name of Pustavar (not sure of spelling). I just remember Julius saying "Pustavarrrrrrrrrr scoring". He definately had a very distinctive voice.

Frank Wachlorawicz (sp?).

Pustovar. Grew up down the street from me, although I wasn't born until 79. Way to remember the name though!

Man what a voice. To this day I remember the distinct sound of it and saying the score backwards with the pause.

during a very late season 1972 Gopher basketball game Julius announced, "Final score.....Michigan.....92 (crowd sadly groaned)...............Michigan State 96!!!!!!!!!!!! The crowd went wild as the Michigan loss assured Minn of a Big Ten title. The pauses and the reverse of the winner/loser were an all time classic.

I remember that as well. I remember it a bit differently in that he would add a little length to the first syllable as well, making it come out something like Pooo-sta-varrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. There was also a guy on that same Chisholm team named Kevin Kochever and as I recall, Jules used to do the same thing at the end with the elongated "r."

I, too, smiled when I saw this thread. He hammered more names as he grew older, but he had such a distinct style that any mispronunciations were easily overlooked.

What great memories.

He went to Augsburg a few years after I had graduated from there. Played a couple of pick-up games against him. Egads he could shoot. From a long way from the basket.

Mr. McDonald sure knew how to get the most out of people. Just imagine if they had the 3-point line in high school back then!

My last name wouldn't work well for Jules though, only 5 letters and ends with an "ec". There are a lot of good last names from the Range that he could have made sound really good.

Are you sure you aren't confusing him with Sid.

I think the Ohio State basketball "riot" was one game and I know there were others, but I remember how angry he would sound when he'd yell at the students to stay off the floor at the end of a big game. He would repeat it several times; each time getting louder and angrier because they weren't listening.

Being a bit younger, I only got to hear him do a couple games. My favorite was indiana kicker Pete Stoyanovich!

I was "at" that game as well--my first Gopher BB game. We had to watch on a "closed circuit" screen in the old (still called Williams Arena) ice arena as the game was sold out. You could hear the live roars and Julie's voice right through the wall the two arenas share.

I also remember at Memorial the "there's a squuuuuuuirrel on the field. He's at the 30, the 20, the 10...touuuuuuuuchdown!"

Julie was the greatest.

Probably almost the same everywhere. Oddly, I don't remember that many students (in the early '70's) caring one way or another or even knowing who won or what the score was. I attended every game, rooted and yelled, but usually walked out having enjoyed the game without realizing what the final outcome was or standings or bowl possibilities. Basketball, however, was much different. Knew everything about them. Odd.
