There is no reason to believe that Claeys won’t coach against Washington State in the Holiday Bowl, but beyond that it’s anyone’s guess as to whether he will remain on the job.
At a minimum, one would have to think there has been a level of distrust created when it comes to Claeys and his superiors. A day after suspending 10 players this week following a sexual assault investigation conducted by the university, school president Eric Kaler wrote in a letter to boosters that Claeys made the decision to suspend the players, with support from athletic director Mark Coyle.
It’s logical to think that some of these players will look to transfer and they could be followed by teammates who want no part of this situation.
There also is the potential that this will impact recruiting, considering there isn’t a competing university around that won’t point out the issues at Minnesota when trying to convince a prospect that going to the Gophers would be a mistake.
This season was far from perfect for the Gophers, but they did win every game they were expected to win, finished 5-4 in the Big Ten and got invited to a decent bowl game. By Minnesota’s standards it certainly wasn’t awful and Claeys considered it a step in the right direction.
The past week appears to have wiped out that progress, and, once again, leaves this program facing an uncertain future.
